    As a leading Residential Treatment Center in the Greater Richmond area, Hallmark Youthcare treats adolescents with emotional and behavioral issues triggered by trauma. Treatment is provided in a warm and friendly environment by a group of well-trained, highly motivated staff that takes pride in delivering quality care.

    Currently, we are accepting applications for a Special Education Teacher.

    Salary: $55,000 - $64,000 Annually, Sign on Bonus $5,000

    Essential Functions:

    • Participates in Treatment Team meetings (or provides information) to communicate with other clinician disciplines in regard to resident/ student progress.
    • Draws on content standards in the relevant curriculum frameworks to plan sequential units of study, individual lessons, and learning activities that make learning cumulative and advances residents’/students’ level of content knowledge.
    • Draws on results of formal and informal assessments and knowledge of human development to identify learning activities appropriate to the specific discipline, age and range of cognitive levels being taught.
    • Makes learning objectives clear to residents/students.
    • Incorporates acquired knowledge into daily performance as evidenced by classroom management and lessons.
    • Maintains a clear and organized classroom environment aesthetically conducive to academic progress and behavioral growth.
    • Demonstrates appreciation for, and sensitivity to the diversity among residents/students especially in regard to race, gender, ethnicity, class and learning style.
    • Provides appropriate documentation necessary to develop Individualized Education Plans or Regular Education Plan for assigned residents/students.
    • Updates and implements, as required/needed the Individualized Education Plan or regular education Plan for assigned residents/students.
    • Prepares written lesson plans with clear objectives and relevant measurable outcomes and submits to the Director of Education bi-weekly.
    • Provides detailed lesson plans for Substitute Teachers as needed.
    • Maintains records of attendance.
    • Reports in writing, to the Education Director/Program Director all medical/legal incidents involving staff and/or students.

    Competencies:

    • Considerable knowledge of the principles and practices of teaching.
    • Considerable knowledge of subjects and activities required in the field of specialization.
    • Considerable knowledge of instructional methods applicable to the field of specialization.
    • Considerable knowledge of current literature, trends and sources of information in the field of education.
    • Ability to evaluate critically the educational achievements of students and to give assignments according to their interests and ability.
    • Ability to prepare lesson plans and organize a meaningful instructional program.
    • Ability to prepare examinations to test the attainment of students.
    • Ability to maintain records, and prepare reports and correspondence related to the work.
    • Must have personal social skills and maturity to handle students with emotional difficulties, have the ability to function as a member of departmental/clinician team, and tolerate contact with residents under a variety of circumstances.
    • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely both in oral and written form.
    • Ability to interact appropriately with the residents in accordance with Hallmark Youthcare’s Treatment Philosophy, the Program Manual, Individual Treatment Plan, and unit programs.
    • ** Ability to pass a background check and drug screening.**

    Expected Hours of Work:

    This is a full-time position.

    Requirements:

    • Baccalaureate degree required; Special Education preferred. OR Master’s degree in Education preferred, Special Education preferred.
    • Prior experience with children or adolescents with disabilities in a classroom or behavioral healthcare setting.
    • Current Professional License to teach and educate issued by the State of Virginia Board of Education, Special Education preferred. OR Eligible for Virginia Provisional/Conditional License to teach and educate issued be the State of Virginia Board of Education, Special Education preferred.
    • Must be certified or able to become certified in CPR, first aid, AED, and Handle with Care.
    • Must have valid Virginia Driver’s License in good standing if on Hallmark’s Approved Driver’s List
