  • Responsibilities

    Cambridge has a career opportunity for Linguists/Translators to join our team in Afghanistan.

     Linguists/Translators will convert spoken and written statements from one language to another in various settings.

    • Preparing typed English translations of recorded and/or Government-provided source media
    • Translating, transcribing, interpreting, performing QC and validating services
    • Performing, as required, administrative duties related to tasks (such duties may include, but are not limited to, placing log sheets, line sheets, duplicating tapes and/or summaries into binders, copying and stapling related paperwork, and labeling storage boxes)
    • Completing TIU/DEA-sponsored on-site instruction pertaining to the operation of specific equipment and software utilized for the execution of translator/linguist support (equipment and software may include audio recording machines, computerized word processor/data management software and other pertinent equipment determined as necessary)
    • Comprehending and complying with regulations, as provided by TIU, which may be imposed by the Government of Afghanistan or other official entity

    Required Skills

    Conversationally speak and write English in accordance with (IAW) Language Proficiency Requirements listed below and changing mission requirements.

    Speak and write at least one of the following languages:

    • Dari
    • Pashto
    • Uzbek
    • Turkmen
    • Baluchi
    • Pashayi (or Pashai)
    • Urdu
    • Punjabi
    • Naristani
    • Arabic

     

    At a minimum, each translator/linguist shall:

    • Demonstrate language proficiency rating of “3” or above in speaking, listening, reading, and writing
    • Demonstrate congruity judgment in the target language and a proficiency rating of “3” or above in speaking, listening, reading, writing, and congruity judgment in English is required
    • Demonstrate sufficient English language comprehension to be able to understand and respond to oral and written communication
    • Demonstrate the ability to understand basic elements of speech in a standard dialect (NOTE:  Standard dialect refers to the listening skills necessary to understand the essentials of all speech including technical discussion within a special field.)
    • Possess skills necessary to listen and comprehend the required foreign language(s) with “native” or “near-native” ability and ability to follow accurately the basic elements of conversations
    • Possess skills necessary to read and comprehend the required foreign language with “native” or “near-native” ability, and to read and understand various text-types
    • Demonstrate ability to comprehend slang and colloquial expressions in the required foreign language and translate them into their English equivalent.
    • Demonstrate understanding of face-to-face speech with sufficiently broad vocabulary that paraphrasing or explanations are unnecessary

     

    Also, candidates should possess ability to pass the following:

    • Pass initial polygraph screening and any follow-on polygraph screening that may be required/administered by the DEA or designated Government agency
    • Pass initial biometrics screening, medical requirements, and background checks as a condition of employment. All costs associated with biometrics, medical, and background checks shall be the responsibility of the contractor.

     

    At a minimum, each translator/linguist shall be able to achieve typing at least 35 words per minute in their native language and at least 20 words per minute in English.  

    Required Experience
