    PART-TIME, 20 HOURS PER WEEK, DAYSHIFT, MONDAY-FRIDAY, 8:00AM-4:30PM

     

    SUMMARY:

    This role is intended to provide current undergraduate students with the opportunity to learn the clinical lab field. Supports various laboratory departments and clients by performing tasks, determined by the department management team, such as order entry, specimen collections, processing equipment and reagent preparation checks, specimen transport distribution, supply inventory and other non-technical support. 

     

    PURPOSE:

    The purpose of this document is to describe the general nature and level of work performed by personnel as classified; it is not intended to serve as an inclusive list of all responsibilities associated with this position.

     

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: include the following.  Other duties may be assigned.

    1. Fulfills laboratory assistant or specimen processor duties while supporting the work of technicians, technologists and scientists in an area of testing in a medical diagnostic laboratory.

    2. Learns standard operating procedures for analyzing and storing specimens.

    3. Learns how to use laboratory equipment and software appropriate for assigned tasks.

    4. Prepares specimens for testing in laboratory departments through plating, aliquoting, distributing and sorting.

    5. Completes independent projects in assigned area of laboratory.

    6. Works under direct supervision and performs general duties as assigned by the designated department.

    7. Performs all paperwork, technical, and non-technical procedures required to process and submit specimens.

    8. Supports the lab by performing data entry, loading instruments, performing maintenance on all types of equipment and gathering supplies for testing.

    9. Performs a variety of administrative duties for the designated department including clerical and customer service functions.

    QUALIFICATIONS:

    Education/Experience:

    High school graduate or equivalent required.  Pursuing a bachelor’s degree in a Life Science concentration.

     

    Language Ability:

    Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.  Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.  Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.  Convey a skilled phone manner for handling internal and external customers issues.

     

    Math Ability:

    Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.

     

    Reasoning Ability:

    Ability to work independently; demonstrate initiative and analytical ability; and possess excellent verbal and written communication skills.  Demonstrate the ability to work with minimal supervision and direction.

     

    Computer Skills:

    Capacity to cover a broad scope of technologies and functionalities such as password resets (all systems), Microsoft Windows issues or questions, assistance with Outlook or other Office products, etc. Along with these technical skills, this position requires general computer skills including Windows XP, Microsoft Office (Excel, Word), etc. Working knowledge of the Misys Lab system to include patient reporting processes.
