    JOB SUMMARY

    The Perioperative Nurse Intern program at Houston Physicians’ Hospital is based on the Association of PeriOperative Registered Nurses (AORN) Periop 101 program and is open to current registered nurses who have an interest in perioperative nursing. The program is designed to be one year in length consisting of a six-month structured learning program and a six-month supervised internship period. The nurse intern will be trained via on-line didactic courses and through hands-on skills that are essential to perioperative nursing. The course allows the nurse intern to learn in a clinical setting with coaching from a Clinical Nurse Educator and qualified staff. Upon successful completion of the program, the nurse intern will move to an available perioperative nurse position for a period of no less than two years.

    QUALIFICATIONS:

    • Minimum of an Associate’s Degree in Nursing (ADN) from an accredited RN program; Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) from an accredited RN program preferred
    • Licensure as a Registered Nurse in the State of Texas
    • BLS Certification (minimum); ACLS preferred

    OCCUPATIONAL EXPOSURE

    Category I exposure to bloodborne pathogens, frequent exposure to chemical hazards and may encounter radiation hazards.

    RESPONSIBILITIES:

    •  Deliver high quality patient-focused health care services that meet the assessed and individually planned needs of each patient on the assigned unit
    • Rotate through all surgical services in the OR
    • Shadow assigned team members in the perioperative and perianesthesia setting
    • Shadow assigned team members in other assigned departments
    • Complete all assignments within the specified time frame
    • Achieve 80% proficiency in all graded assignments
