    About the Organization The Haitian Bridge Alliance (HBA) is a 501(c)(3) grassroots nonprofit community organization that advocates for fair and humane immigration policies and provides migrants and immigrants with humanitarian, legal, and social services, with a particular focus on Black migrants, the Haitian community, women and girls, LGBTQIA+ individuals, and survivors of torture and other human rights abuses. HBA works to elevate the issues unique to Black migrants and build solidarity and collective movement toward policy change. HBA also co-founded Cameroon Advocacy Network and co-manages the Black Immigrants Bail Fund.

    About the Role

    The Community Center Director will lead the opening of the first-of-its-kind Community Center in San Diego to serve Black immigrants with holistic, wrap-around services including legal services, case management services, and mental health services.

    The Community Center Director will manage a team of 14 mission-driven and passionate individuals with a commitment to fostering an inclusive culture where individuals can show up as their authentic selves. The Director will embrace diversity, equity, and inclusion both internally and externally in continued support of the communities HBA serves.

    This position will oversee the operation of the physical space, operational policies and procedures, and manage internal systems to keep staff up and running on a day-to-day basis. As the organization grows, the Community Center Director will play a pivotal role in setting and building sustainable and scalable operational standards and the center’s physical infrastructure to ensure HBA is able to consistently deliver holistic, wrap-around services for the Black immigrant community in San Diego, including recent arrivals. The candidate must reside in San Diego, California.

    Candidate Profile

    Reporting to HBA’s Co-Founder and Executive Director, the Community Center Director is a highly driven and experienced professional who thrives in fast-paced, start-up-like environments and has an excellent track record of managing teams to deliver results.

    The ideal candidate for this role will be a collaborative and communicative leader with excellent management and operational skills that will ensure Community Center staff stays focused on its north star: To provide excellent services to the Haitian and Black immigrant community in San Diego. The candidate must be fluent in Haitian Creole and well versed in racial justice.

    Organizational Leadership and Management

    Demonstrated success in team leadership with a successful track record of recruiting, inspiring, managing and retaining a diverse, mission-driven team.

    Manage a Case Management Director, a Childcare Manager, a Human Resource Manager, a mental health team, and operations staff; ensure they are clear on their goals, deliverables, and what success looks like.

    Operations

    Handle key aspects of overall org-wide and center operations, ensuring the center runs smoothly on a daily basis.

    Set operational standards that create and maintain effective processes. Ensure successful implementation by engaging the right participants and setting the agenda.

    Serve as a communication link between Community Center staff and HBA’s Executive Director, Humanitarian Director, Development Staff, and Legal Staff

    Serve as liaison to finance and HR consultants in handling ongoing or routine workflows.

    Collaborate with an HR consultant on hiring, on/offboarding, and other staff planning; be a leader in fostering the center’s culture and in maintaining effective team relationships and high morale.

    Manage IT needs for the organization alongside the HBA Operations Director, administer email, cloud, internet, and password services.

    Manage ordering of general office supplies, equipment, janitorial supplies, and maintenance supplies as needed with the HBA’s Operations Director’s support

    Oversee the annual department budget alongside HBA’s Operations Director including monitoring and approving expenses.

    Develop and ensure compliance with health and safety processes and procedures, as per local and statewide ordinances, including health safety guidelines specific to COVID.

    Facilities

    Oversee building maintenance, including needed repairs, upgrades, and preventative maintenance; carry out minor repairs or fixes where possible; plan and oversee capital improvements and upgrades.

    Ensure the physical space is well cared for, helping create a positive environment for Community Center staff and visitors.

    Schedule and supervise out-sourced security, janitorial, and other building service providers (e.g., plumbers, technicians, elevator services, engineers, etc.); monitor and manage systems for HVAC and electrical; own and upkeep building permits and plans.

    Maintain a positive relationship with the landlord to ensure proper and effective use as per lease agreement.

    Ensure compliance with current OSHA, City, State, and Federal regulations and other requirements.

    On call for building-related emergencies or incidents

    Development

    Contribute to development efforts, including drafting facilities- or operations-related content for grants, reviewing proposals, establishing and nurturing relationships with key stakeholders and funders, and assisting with special events.

    Develop and support implementation of data tracking tools to measure the effectiveness of efforts to support programs, working closely with HBA Development Staff.

    Partner with the HBA leadership team to develop and monitor impact metrics consistent with relevant plans and create a system of ongoing evaluation, ensuring strong work plans and alignment between individual, team, and organizational goals and priorities; formulate and evaluate alternative solutions and/or recommendations to achieve the goals of the program or function.

    Strong candidates will offer:

    7 - 10 years’ experience proven experience in a management role; non-profit administration, strategic planning, and performance management are essential.

    Experience with Operations; Bring a comprehensive record of overseeing various functions of a rapidly expanding organization with an eye towards efficiency and scalability, comfort reading, understanding, and negotiating contracts and leases.

    Demonstrated relationship management experience, including stakeholder identification, engagement and follow-up.

    Excellent interpersonal skills to inspire, motivate, hold accountable and troubleshoot the complex issues that arise in a rapidly growing and ambitious organization.

    Exceptional communication skills including speaking, meeting facilitation, and consensus building.

    Results/action-oriented; self-directed, highly organized, strategic thinking with strong execution skills.

    Engender trust and followership in others through compelling influence and passion in their beliefs.

    Understanding and respect for populations with diverse cultural, economic, and educational backgrounds either through lived or professional experience.

    Ability to receive and provide constructive feedback with an eye towards growth

    Thorough understanding of the intersectional nature of im/migration and the many issues it touches: Gender based violence, the legacy of colonialism, systemic racism, and the carceral state.

    Some working knowledge of building infrastructure and maintenance (mechanical, electrical, and plumbing, carpentry, HVAC, etc.).

    Strong understanding of IT infrastructure, with the capacity to quickly learn and master new systems including Administrator role.

    Willingness to work hard, set and take direction - but also creatively solve problems for which the answers are not always obvious.

    Physical Requirements

    Ability to communicate via phone and email.

    Ability to stand and walk for extended periods of time, with occasional lifting, carrying, bending at the waist, kneeling, crouching, and reaching.

    Ability to lift up to 20 pounds.
