  • Responsibilities

    Performs effective telephone greetings.

    Demonstrates ability to take accurate messages.

    Can perform operation of telephone.

    Answers routine questions regarding departmental operations.

    Receives complaints and aware of how to initiate response protocol.

    Demonstrates effective communication skills.

    Orientation to hospital campus/ability to provide accurate directions.

    Demonstrates attention to details.

    Plans, organizes, gathers, and assembles data.

    Demonstrates knowledge of common formats for correspondence and reports.

    Demonstrates correct use of department specific equipment.

    Accurately opens, sorts, and routes mail.

    Monitors inventory and orders supplies.

    Performs additional duties as requested by the HIM Department Director.

    Ability to demonstrate a logical consistent assessment of the data provided for proper assignment of ICD-10-CM and CPT codes for all patients with 95% accuracy.

    Demonstrates ability to utilize test results that are interpreted by physicians when assigning ICD-10 codes on outpatient claims with 95% accuracy.

    Codes medical records in a timely manner.

    Codes 30 radiology charts/50 laboratory charts and hour with 95% accuracy rate.

    Establishes effective communication skills with physician and office staff to obtain written clarification if unsure about which code to assign or if documentation is not available.

    Monitors uncoded/unbilled reports to ensure all records for all coders are coded within 30 days of discharge.

    Codes outpatient surgery and OBS charts within 3 days of discharge.

    Ensures cross training of personnel on different types of accounts.

    Distributes coded records in appropriate areas, physician's, to be filed, etc.

    Maintains coding productivity data and post daily uncoded/unbilled onto required worksheets.

    Ensures coders are aware of issues that pertain to their expertise.

    Takes into consideration contrast questionnaire and recodes as appropriate and notifies PFS of the change.

    Participates in coding audits as requested.

    Demonstrates flexibility of schedule to accommodate departmental needs.

    Codes recurrent accounts and notifies director of any issues.

    Assist with completion of evaluations of employees in their area.

    Assist with development of new policies and procedures.

    Distributes copies of PFS report to appropriate coders to ensure resolution within three working days.

    Monitors and reports weekly snapshot every Friday.

    Required Skills

    Minimum Education: High School graduate or GED equivalent.

    Associate or Bachelor degree in Health Information Management (or similar program) from an accredited program, preferred.

    Required Experience

    Work Experience: Medical terminology and anatomy and physiology required. Minimum of four (4) years' experience in acute care hospital based ICD-10-CM and ICD-10-PCS coding required. Experience with CPT-4 coding desirable. Working knowledge of AHA Coding Clinics and Local Coverage Determination Policies.

    Required License/ Certification/Registration: CCS, RHIT, RHIA or CPC certification required. RHIA/RHIT - new grads considered (must obtain certification within 18 months of hire/CCS or CPC certification within 36 months of hire);
