Operations
The Three Forks Ranch operates a large-scale backgrounding and yearling operation as well as a luxury guest ranch. The agricultural operation has the capacity to background and graze 10,000 head of yearling cattle per year. Calves are purchased October through December and are backgrounded on the Sandstone and Triangle properties near Riverton, WY. The calves spend the summer on grass at the main ranch near Savery, WY and are sold in September.
The Sandstone and Triangle properties cover approximately 6,000 acres with 2,400 irrigated acres. Irrigation is managed through twenty-three pivots and a small amount of flood irrigated fields. Irrigated farmland is intensively managed and produces the forage required for the 10,000 head feedlot. The main ranch covers approximately 280,000 deeded acres and provides summer grazing along with the backdrop for guest operations.
Reporting Relationships
The general manager will report to the owner and work closely with their management and financial personnel. The successful candidate will also be expected to collaborate closely with outside contractors, consultants, and advisors.
Specific Functions
- GM is responsible for the daily oversight and operation of all farming, livestock feeding, and grazing activities.
- GM will work with and oversee a crew of approximately forty people. The GM will be responsible for hiring, supervising, and dismissing all full-time and seasonal employees. The GM will be expected to delegate responsibilities among key personnel and facilitate effective communication and teamwork amongst all ranch personnel.
- GM will be responsible for the financial oversight and reporting for agricultural operations. This includes reporting monthly operating activity and budget reports as well as annual operational and capital budgeting.
- GM is responsible for the maintenance scheduling and upkeep of all operating infrastructure and equipment. The GM will coordinate the purchase and sale of all equipment and vehicles per the owner's instructions.
- GM will develop and implement plans for cropping, grazing, and weed control that maximize production and profitability without diminishing the aesthetic and recreational values of the property.
- GM will be responsible for representing the owner in the community and maintaining trade accounts as needed. The GM will maintain constructive relationships within the community while being an informed advocate for the ranch owner.
- The general manager will need to have a working knowledge of the H2A and H2B guest worker programs that the ranch is presently enrolled in. In addition, this individual will need to have experience in obtaining permits and visas to permit the ranch's returning workers arrival at the ranch.
Specific Qualifications
- Successful candidates must have the following traits: proven management and leadership skills, high energy and self-esteem, effective written and oral communication skills, ability to effect change on short notice, be an initiative-taker, and operate with limited supervision. The ideal candidate will be able to lead a team while working alongside them.
- Successful candidates must possess demonstrated experience in intensive farming and irrigation practices, grazing management, as well as management of cattle feeding and health protocols.
- Successful candidates must ensure that the property is kept in a safe and clean working condition.
- Successful candidates will be effective in communicating with owners and employees. They will maintain complete confidentiality relative to the ranch and its owners, the owners' family members, and their guests.
- Computer competency is required for communication and record keeping.
