Overview
[Location: Remote (US) || Reports to: CEO]
Bond is a fast-growing startup that is on a mission to unlock a world where communication knows no boundaries. We leverage cutting-edge technology to make personalized, high-quality sign language interpretation effortlessly accessible to everyone, anywhere.
Our first product, BondVRS, reimagines Video Relay Service (VRS), a critical service for the Deaf community. With a single click, Deaf users can instantly summon our highly-skilled interpreters to any video call—whether on our proprietary, Zoom-like platform or on platforms of their choice (e.g., Zoom, Google Meet, Webex, Slack, FaceTime, WhatsApp).
We are growing quickly, raising a new round of funding, and are seeking an experienced Head of Engineering to help us scale. This technical leader will be a 'player-coach', a perfect role for an established engineering leader who has a very strong software development background also as an individual contributor and still loves to build.
You will be responsible for leading our overall engineering function, which includes managing our current outsourced engineering teams, as well as building our future in-house team. You will partner closely with subject matter experts on foundational architectural decisions and with Product and Operations leadership to deliver a world-class user experience. This is a unique opportunity to leverage your leadership experience to shape our technology, our team, and our engineering culture.
As a team of Deaf and hearing individuals - including top-tier ASL interpreters - it is incredibly important that this person comes into the role with the right mindset to build a product that meets the requirements for a wide set of user needs and experiences. Your work will directly impact the pace of innovation in the VRS industry and enhance how hundreds of thousands of Deaf individuals access communication.
Responsibilities:
- Lead, Manage, and Coach: Lead the growth of Engineering at Bond by managing and coaching our current off-shore engineering teams, while planning for and hiring a talented team of in-house engineers.
- Ensure Quality and Scalability: Establish and enforce coding standards, review processes, and engineering best practices. You'll be accountable for system reliability and performance, ensuring that the codebase remains clean, testable, and ready for scale.
- Be Hands-On: All leaders at Bond are hands-on within their domains; in part because understanding the details empowers leaders to make better decisions and in part because we are a small early stage startup and it's all hands on deck! The ideal candidate is a systems thinker and a detail-driven doer. You will be working side-by-side with your team to design, write, review and deploy code.
- Shape a Purpose-Driven, User-Centered Culture: At Bond, we obsess over serving our customers - and exceeding their expectations. You will need to dive deep into the ‘why' before tackling the ‘how', foster continuous improvement, and ensure everyone connects their contributions to our broader mission of improving access and communication for the Deaf community.
- Partner on Technical & Product Vision: Collaborate with the CEO and Product Management to define - and execute - a roadmap that is both ambitious and achievable.
Requirements:
- Proven Engineering Leadership Experience: 5+ years of progressive engineering leadership experience, including hiring, performance management, and scaling software development and operations teams.
- Robust Technical Foundation: 15+ years experience in full-stack software engineering. You've spent years building, shipping, and maintaining production-level software. You're deeply familiar with modern backend and frontend technologies and have a track record of designing scalable systems.
- Demonstrated success in a fast-moving, startup environment: You excel in ever-evolving, ambiguous environments and aren't phased when assumptions are disproven and plans change.
- Excellent Communication Skills: You can synthesize high-level business and product goals into clear technical specifications - and can discuss complex engineering tradeoffs with non-technical partners.
Preferences:
- Connection to the Deaf Community: Strong awareness of Deaf culture and accessibility needs is a major plus; personal or professional experience with the Deaf community is ideal.
- Audio & Video Experience: Some experience with real-time interactive audio/video media is preferred, including familiarity with SIP protocol.
- Technical Stack Expertise: Specific prior experience with the following: TypeScript, NestJS, Python, React and React Router, AWS Services, Terraform.
