The Head of Mine Technologies leads Turner Mining Group's technology function within Technical Services, responsible for evaluating,
implementing, and managing all mine technology systems across Turner's project portfolio. This role owns the full lifecycle of
technology deployment, from identification and business case development through commissioning, optimization, and ongoing support
for systems that extend beyond standard equipment capabilities and established procedural frameworks.
The Head of Mine Technologies oversees fleet management systems, machine automation programs, data integration platforms, and
other novel technology implementations that drive operational performance above the baseline. This role will grow with the scope of the
technology deployments and considers leadership of a future team of engineers and technicians embedded across Turner's operations
and serves as the primary technology authority in both internal leadership and client-facing settings.
This position requires deep familiarity with surface mining operations, a strong command of applied and emerging mine technologies,
and the leadership capability to build and manage a high-performing technical team. The successful candidate thinks operationally,
communicates clearly across technical and non-technical audiences, and drives technology adoption that delivers measurable results in
the field.
Position Responsibilities:
Technology Strategy and Roadmap
Develop and maintain Turner's mine technology strategy, including a prioritized roadmap of technologies to evaluate, pilot, and
deploy across the project portfolio.
Evaluate emerging mine technologies including automation, autonomous systems, AI-assisted operations, and advanced
sensing for applicability to Turner's contract mining model.
Build business cases for technology investments and present findings and recommendations to senior leadership.
Establish standards and frameworks for technology selection, integration, performance measurement, and lifecycle
management.
Fleet Management and Operational Systems
Own all fleet management system platforms deployed across Turner's operations, including configuration, maintenance,
integration, and performance optimization.
Manage machine control, high-precision GPS, and payload monitoring systems in coordination with site engineering and
operations teams.
Ensure FMS and machine control systems are properly integrated with Turner's reporting, production tracking, and data
platforms.
Partner with site-level engineers and project managers to ensure technology systems are calibrated to site conditions and
production targets.
Automation and Novel Technology Implementation
Lead evaluation, piloting, and deployment of automation technologies including autonomous haulage, automated drilling, and
remote operations capabilities.
Manage relationships with OEM technology partners and third-party technology vendors throughout the full implementation
lifecycle.
Coordinate with site project managers and Technical Services leadership to ensure technology deployments are operationally
integrated and field-validated prior to full rollout.
Develop and maintain implementation playbooks, commissioning protocols, and performance benchmarks for each technology
program.
Team Leadership and Development
Build, lead, and develop a team of mine technology engineers and technicians responsible for technology deployment and
support across Turner's site portfolio.
Define team structure, roles, and staffing requirements aligned with the breadth and geographic distribution of Turner's active
operations.
Set clear performance expectations, provide coaching and development opportunities, and foster a culture of technical
excellence and operational accountability.
Coordinate team deployment and priorities across active projects in partnership with site project managers and the Director of
Technical Services.
Commercial Support and Client Engagement
Lead the development, negotiation, and ongoing management of vendor and OEM agreements related to mine technology
systems, including software licenses, service contracts, and support arrangements, ensuring Turner's interests are protected
and contractual obligations are met across the technology portfolio.
Serve as Turner's technology authority in client-facing settings, including proposal development, contract scoping, and
operational performance reviews.
Clearly communicate technology capabilities, implementation plans, and performance outcomes to client engineering and
operations teams.
Support business development efforts by positioning Turner's technology program as a competitive differentiator in contract
mining pursuits.
Participate in industry forums, OEM partnerships, and technology working groups to maintain Turner's awareness of the
competitive landscape.
Compliance, Safety, and Standards
Ensure all technology implementations comply with MSHA regulations and applicable site safety standards.
Develop and maintain standard operating procedures and training materials for all managed technology systems.
Provide technical input to support incident investigations when technology systems are a contributing factor.
Establish change management processes to support safe and effective technology adoption by site crews and supervision.
Perform other duties as assigned to support safe and effective project execution.
The Ideal Candidate:
Knowledge
Bachelor's degree in Mining Engineering, Computer Science, Systems Engineering, or a related technical discipline. Advanced
degree a plus.
Minimum of 7 years of experience in mining operations, mine engineering, or mining technology roles, with demonstrated
progression in scope and responsibility.
Demonstrated experience deploying or managing fleet management systems (Minestar, Wenco, Modular, or equivalent).
Familiarity with autonomous or semi-autonomous mining systems and the operational frameworks required to support their
deployment.
Working knowledge of data integration, reporting platforms, and operational analytics as applied in a mining environment.
Experience managing technical teams in a multi-site or geographically distributed field environment preferred.
Key Competencies / Skills
Deep understanding of surface mining operations and the practical constraints of deploying technology in a contract mining
environment.
Ability to evaluate and translate complex technical capabilities into operational value and business justification.
Proven leadership with the ability to build, develop, and direct a geographically distributed team of engineers and technicians.
Effective communicator with the credibility and clarity to engage at the field, operational, and executive levels.
Commercially minded with experience supporting proposals, client relationships, or business development activities.
Comfortable operating in a dynamic, growth-oriented environment with evolving priorities and significant organizational
visibility.
