  • Responsibilities

    Reports To:

    Special Education Director and/or Assistant Special Education Director

    Qualifications:

    • Valid Tennessee Teacher’s license with appropriate endorsement

    Purpose Statement:

    The Hearing Impaired Teacher will work with students to provide needed support and resources to facilitate communication within the school setting.

    Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

    • Works directly with students using manual communication (sign language) to interpret in the education setting
    • Provides interpretation between spoken and manual communication as needed
    • Interprets spoken material into sign language for understanding of deaf as needed
    • Interprets sign language of deaf into oral or written language for hearing individuals or others not conversant in sign language
    • Works directly and in consultation with regular educators, special educators, and peers in providing special interpretive assistance and/or instruction
    • Works in coordination with the deaf interpreter and speech/language teacher in establishing and making progress toward Individualized Educational Program goals
    • Assumes responsibility for the day-to-day operation of the deaf education program in conjunction with the regular classroom teacher or special education teacher
    • Plans curriculum and prepares lessons and other materials, considering factors such as individual needs, abilities, learning levels, and physical limitations of the students
    • Utilizes special teaching tools, techniques, and equipment
    • Orders and manages materials and supplies
    • Maintains necessary records as prescribed by the LEA as well as state and federal mandates, while maintaining confidentiality at all times
    • Facilitates and/or attends IEP-Team meetings and the implementation of IEPs
    • Administers, scores and interprets achievement tests and other pertinent testing data;
    • Facilitates the referral-testing process
    • Acts as a consultant/resource person
    • Performs other work related duties as assigned by the Special Education Director and/or Assistant Special Education Supervisor

    Capacity and Ability Requirements:

    The usual job demands requires the following physical requirements: some lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, some stooping, kneeling, and physical dexterity.

    Terms of Employment:

    Salary and benefits shall be paid consistent with the District’s approved compensation plan. Length of the work year and hours of employment shall be those established by the District.

    Evaluation:

    Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board’s policy on evaluation of personnel.
