    The Academic Success Coach (Professional Advisor) provides and documents holistic academic advising (e.g., success coaching, course selection assistance, referral to campus resources) for transfer, exploring (undeclared), and probationary students as well as students with declared majors seeking to expand their academic success strategies. Additionally, the Coach is responsible to the Director of Academic Success for providing administrative, clerical, and technical support with analyses of students’ General Education status, collaborations with campus offices, preregistration and add/drop coordination, and campus events including or related to academic advising. Through programs and services offered Academic Advising supports a wide range of diverse student populations, therefore it is imperative that the Academic Success Coach demonstrates a desire to learn about the varying needs of diverse populations, can appropriately engage, and celebrate the difference of all students we work with.

     

    REQUIRED EDUCATION

    • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience; Master’s degree preferred.

     

    REQUIRED EXPERIENCE

    • Two to three years staff experience in a client based, service-oriented environment. Academic advising experience preferred.

     

    PRIMARY DUTIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

    • Provide academic advising and success coaching for first and second year students, exploring majors, transfers, and probationary students, as well as students referred through the APU C.A.R.E.S. Referral system who are in need of academic success planning.
    • Evaluate General Education status for specific student populations and foster student planning and problem solving to facilitate timely completion of General Education and other degree requirements.
    • Connect students with appropriate APU resources (e.g., for tutoring, career/major exploration, wellness).
    • Answer advising questions posed by faculty advisors, staff, students, and parents (within FERPA guidelines).
    • Collaborate with academic departments to support departmental advising and to maintain accuracy of academic maps for assigned degree programs.
    • Liaison with Academic Departments, Enrollment Management Services, Student Life, and other offices to coordinate and staff campus events that include academic advising.
    • Organize and maintain office and up-to-date student advising files.
    • Maintain daily electronic timekeeping to document regular, punctual attendance.
    • Execute projects as assigned by the Director.

     

    SKILLS

    • Strong word processing and keyboarding skills of 50 wpm with high degree of accuracy.  
    • Strong clerical, telephone, oral, and written communication skills.  
    • Must demonstrate exceptional multicultural competence.
    • Must be well organized, detail oriented, and capable of managing multiple tasks concurrently.  
    • Must be able to keep information confidential.

     

    MENTAL DEMANDS

    PHYSICAL DEMANDS

    • Intermittent sitting, standing, and walking. 
    • Requires repetitive motions on keyboard. 
    • Telephone usage-hearing and speaking. 
    • Ability to lift, pull, grasp, bend to lower file drawers, and reach to top of 5-drawer file cabinet. 
    • Ability to lift 20 pounds occasionally.

     

    VISUAL DEMANDS

    • Computer monitor and reading.

     

    ENVIRONMENT

    • Pleasant office setting, comfortable temperature.

     

    TECHNOLOGIES

    • Proficient in Google Apps and Microsoft Office, particularly Word, and Excel.
    • Proficiency with PeopleSoft preferred.

     

    COMPENSATION

    • Grade 7: $19.49 - $25.33
