GENERAL PURPOSEWork closely with and advise officers and detectives to identify, preserve, and collect evidence from crime scenes. Oversee the development, preservation, collection, safeguarding, and presentation of evidence for the purpose of criminal prosecution. Manage the safekeeping of found, recovered, and seized personal property which may be returned to rightful owners. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

    1. Coordinates the efforts to collect, receive, and record physical evidence directly or indirectly from crime scenes.
    2. Oversees a variety of tests and examinations for forensic evaluation and records findings for use in prosecution.
    3. Photographs crime scenes and evidence (potentially exposed to traumatic scenes and situations).
    4. May handle/process controlled substances, biohazardous materials, or unidentified substances. Provides safeguards and oversight to others on handling potentially dangerous materials.
    5. Responds on or off duty to major incidents and emergencies as deemed appropriate and assists in criminal investigations. This may occur outside of regularly scheduled hours, on weekends, nights, and holidays.
    6. Understands health care risks of common biological and chemical hazards and ensures proper safety procedures are followed.
    7. Ensures compliance with applicable federal and state OSHA regulations and other safety regulations, policies and practices; coordinates annual department safety training for department staff with processing evidence and handling materials.
    8. Develops policies and procedures relative to evidence and property, maintains reports and records, and strict chain of custody with evidence.
    9. May testify as an expert witness relative to evidence collection and test results.
    10. Enters data on all evidence testing and resulting findings into department data bases and report systems.
    11. Prepares daily and weekly reports on activities.
    12. Maintains confidentiality relative to investigations, security, test results and other protected or sensitive information.
    13. Maintains trust and confidence of peers, supervisors, the Courts, and general citizenry.
    14. Handles U.S. currency, valuables, and property with integrity and a high ethical standard.
    15. Works with the Utah State Crime Lab and other agencies in the processing of evidence.
    16. Trains new employees and officers in the knowledge and expertise in criminal forensics methods and best practices.
    17. Maintains records of property held safekeeping or for later return to its proper owner.
    18. Assists in developing policies and procedures for the Department, to ensure efficient operations of the department, and to implement directives.
    19. Conducts and oversees fingerprint services, analysis and processing.
    20. Assists in the development and implementation of departmental goals, objectives, policies, and procedures.
    21. Interacts with the public in a professional and respectful manner with an emphasis on strong customer service values and skills. May interface with the public to answer questions and provide information relative to the safe and proper handling of found/recovered and seized property.
    22. May be required perform physically demanding job related tasks such as lifting heavy objects, standing for long periods of time, or being exposed to harsh weather.
    23. Maintains efficient and effective work ethic while working independent of direct supervision.
    24. May participate in various City and Herriman Police Department activities.
    25. Other duties as assigned.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

    EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

    • Ten (10) years of experience in police work, three years of which must have been equivalent to lieutenant or higher.

    • Bachelor's Degree in a related field from an accredited university

    OR

    • High School Diploma or equivalent degree
    • 3 years of directly related experience in crime scene forensics and evidence control

    OR

    • An equivalent level of combined education and experience.
    • Ten (10) years of experience in police work, three years of which must have been equivalent to lieutenant or higher.

    PREFERRED EXPERIENCE:

    • Ten (10) years of experience in police work, three years of which must have been equivalent to lieutenant or higher.

    • Law enforcement forensics.

    • Law enforcement evidence and property control.

    CERTIFICATIONS/LICENSES:

    • Thorough knowledge of modern law enforcement principles, procedures, techniques, and equipment.

    • Thorough knowledge of applicable laws, ordinances, and department rules and regulations.

    • Must be at least 21 years of age.

    • Requires a valid Utah Driver's License.

    • Must be able to pass a pre-employment drug test, background check, and driving record check.

    • Legal resident of the United States for at least 5 years.

    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

    • Ability to communicate through all levels of the City.
    • Intermediate knowledge of Microsoft systems including Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
    • Ability to present information in front of high level law enforcement officials.

    WORK ENVIRONMENT

    • Tasks require variety of physical activities, generally involving muscular strain, including walking, standing, stooping, sitting, reaching, and light lifting.
    • The ability to speak, hear and see is essential to the performance of daily tasks.
    • Common eye, hand, finger dexterity exist.
    • Exposure to chemicals and harsh environments, etc.
    • Mental application utilizes memory for details; verbal instructions, emotional stability and discriminating thinking.
