ROLE PROFILE SUMMARY:
The sow unit manager is responsible for leading and motivating employees in the sow unit and overseeing the daily tasks through training and instruction. This position involves working in an agricultural environment with hands-on interaction with livestock, regular structured routines, administrative duties, and extensive employee development and oversight.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Plan and direct all production phases on the farm and implement processes as required.
- Implement action plans to meet farm-specific and company-set goals.
- Actively communicate with upper management and veterinarians regarding the health of the herd.
- Ensure strict compliance to all bio-security protocols and take action as necessary.
- Make sure proper vaccinations, medications, and injections are given as needed to promote animal well being and increased production.
- Keep and maintain accurate production records. In addition, maintain an accurate record of the number of animals under their management.
- Provide daily leadership and direction to all farm staff.
- Manage feed and medication inventory and supply.
- Organize the daily production and genetic activities of their departments including:
- Daily care that promotes well being and increased productivity of all animals under their care.
- Monitoring the health of all animals. Communicate all animal well being concerns to site manager.
- Follow the work instruction for care of developing gilts and use of synchronizing products.
- Reinforce compliance of all policies and procedures.
- Conduct team meetings to communicate the goals and direction of the farm and the company.
- Schedule and conduct formal employee reviews at regular intervals.
- Deliver frequent and well-timed informal feedback to develop optimal employee performance and an organizational culture that inspires the same. Must be prepared to release non-performing or ineffective employees.
- Direct, coordinate, train or ensure training of current staff and new hires.
- Implement discipline processes as necessary and provide direction for employees to improve.
- Provide development opportunities for employees on the farm and offer guidance to employees to reach their personal and professional goals.
- Manage labor resources by controlling hours worked by each employee and enforcing employee efficiency.
- Monitor site procurement, layout & permitting and track construction process when applicable.
- Provide leadership on the analysis of production records. Lead communication and decision-making processes with farm owners to maximize production profitability.
- Implement HPI production policies for care and management of animals
- Set short- and long-term goals for the unit.
- Comply with all company Standard Operating Procedures (SOPS).
- Monitor working condition on back-up generator.
- Ensure safety compliance at all sites.
- Follow all safety rules and practices and encourage coworkers to do the same.
- Implement best management practices for environmental stewardship including:
- Proper regulation of manure storage facility (pit) levels
- Flushing time and recharge of manure handling systems within the barns
- Hold employees accountable for the care and cleanliness of the site.
- Perform maintenance and repairs on buildings and equipment, as well as, housekeeping responsibilities of the barn.
- Ensure all safety procedures are in place and take action to lower safety incidents on the farm.
- Ensure safety equipment and procedures are provided and utilized by all farm staff.
- Promote a safe, professional, and positively motivating work environment.
- Perform all other activities and responsibilities as defined by farm owners.
- Order and manager feed, supplies, and equipment for the farm, herd, and employees.
EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
REQUIRED SKILLS & EXPERIENCE:
- A minimum of 5 years sow experience
- A minimum of 3 years managing overseeing 6 or more employees in a managerial and training role
- A minimum of 2 years managing a sow unit of comparable size
- Extensive knowledge and experience within both the gestation/breeding and farrowing departments
- Requires exemplary leadership, production, problem-solving and communication skills
- Requires dedication, goal-oriented, motivation, positive attitude and ability to effectively lead a team
- Basic data analytical skills are required.
- Possesses time-management skills, as well as the ability to adapt and function effectively in a fast paced, changing environment
- Possesses basic computer skills, and be proficient in Microsoft Office products and software specific to swine industry.
- Display a high level of professionalism and confidentiality.
- Ability to work successfully with limited supervision.
- Ability to recognize problems before they occur and take a proactive approach to resolve the issue.
- Ability to manage confrontational situations in a fair, consistent, and prompt manner.
- Possess strong interpersonal and communication skills.
- Proven ability to lead by example and positively influence a group of people.
- Ability to maintain positive working relationships and support organizational processes and goals
- Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license and insurable driving record
RESPECT AND CARE FOR ALL ANIMALS IS REQUIRED. The ideal candidate must also possess experience in creating a culture of respect and care for all animals throughout the farm system. Knowledge and enforcement of the latest industry biosecurity best practices must be observed and enforced throughout the farm operation. This includes daily showering in and out of facilities where animals are housed.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Ability to work in noise levels that may require hearing protection
Ability to stand, sit, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch for extended periods of time on varied surfaces
Ability to reach with hands and arms, perform repetitive motions, climb over 4-foot gates
Ability to manipulate (lift, carry, move) light to medium weights of up to 50 pounds with reasonable accommodation or assistance from another team member.
Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
Ability to work in a highly interruptive environment
Must be capable of being on their feet for 10 hours
Must possess ambulatory skills sufficient to move throughout the farm
Must possess good hand-eye coordination, arm, hand and finger dexterity, including ability to grasp
Willingness to travel
