    Job Description

    As a member of the Senior Leadership Team (SLT) and reporting directly to the CEO, the Chief Operating Officer (COO) will play a key role in leading and optimizing KIPP SoCal's operations to deliver the best possible outcomes for students. In addition to serving as a vital thought partner to the CEO and other senior leaders, the COO will manage the teams charged with delivering exceptional school operations, facilities management, security, student enrollment, and information technology across KIPP SoCal's network of 22 schools.

    This is a senior leadership position at KIPP SoCal and thus the COO must possess a deep commitment to learning and continuous improvement. The ideal candidate believes effective and efficient operations, grounded in equity and anti-racism, are the core foundation for the success of others. While this role is highly strategic, this individual must also be willing to roll up their sleeves and work alongside operational teams within our schools in order to fulfill KIPP's vision of preparing students in under-resourced communities in the greater Los Angeles and San Diego areas for success in school, college, and life.

    CHIEF OPERATING OFFICER RESPONSIBILITIES

    • PEOPLE MANAGEMENT, TALENT DEVELOPMENT, & ORGANIZATIONAL LEADERSHIP:

      • Provide leadership, guidance, and coaching to organizational leaders responsible for school-based operations, regional operations, and information technology
      • Provide exceptional coaching, development, and modeling in order to grow operational talent and establish leadership pipelines for non-instructional team members in partnership with the Chief Talent and Equity Officer
      • Establish relationships with all School Leaders and School-Based Operational Leaders to ensure that each school-based operations is equitable, efficient, and effective
      • Establish collaborative relationships with our various Districts’ Prop39 offices (LAUSD, MUSD, CUSD, and SDUSD) to ensure that we are being offered district facilities when needed.
    • SYSTEMS DEVELOPMENT AND MANAGEMENT:

      • Identify, develop and implement operational systems improvements that will support highly efficient, effective, and equitable operational performance at KIPP SoCal; both improving upon the current state of operations and preparing for future growth in size and complexity
      • Oversee the creation and management of standardized operating procedures for school-based operations (facilities, facilities maintenance, safety, supplies, food services, transportation, student recruitment) and IT in order to maximize the economy of scale and avoid duplicative efforts
    • STRATEGIC PLANNING AND EXECUTION:

      • Collaborate with the CEO and other members of the SLT to establish and refine KIPP SoCal's strategic plan
      • Translate strategy into a clear and shared vision and action plans for excellent operations and partner with leaders on their team

       

    • COVID-19 LEADERSHIP:

      • Ensure Health & Safety (H&S) is at the forefront of decisions during this pandemic. Lead the various teams in charge of developing and implementing H&S guidelines across the region.
      • Build and maintain relationships with safety experts to ensure KIPP SoCal is utilizing the latest COVID-19 testing technologies and following the right isolation and quarantine protocols.
      • Provide timely dashboards that will display the right data to the rest of the SLT in order to drive the right decisions with the most up-to-date information.

    CHIEF OPERATING OFFICER QUALIFICATIONS

    • 10+ years of progressively increasing operational leadership experience for a growing, multi-site organization, preferably within a school, healthcare, or emergency management setting
    • Commitment to KIPP SoCal's mission and an unwavering belief that ALL students, regardless of their zip codes or demographics, will learn and achieve if given the right opportunities and support
    • Exceptional leadership skills that reflect KIPP SoCal's commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusiveness
    • Experience recruiting, mentoring and supporting diverse and high-performing teams, with strong aptitude for coaching across lines of difference
    • Firm commitment to building a team culture of high expectations, support, inclusion, and continuous learning; comfort soliciting and incorporating feedback and ideas from team members at all levels
    • Demonstrable track record of developing, implementing, and managing business systems and processes to support a large, complex, and growing organization
    • Experience setting vision, leading, planning and managing in a fast-paced, client-service-oriented setting
    • Holds high standards for project management while empowering others to proactively and creatively problem-solve, and model versatility and collaboration for the organization
    • Ability to exercise excellent judgment in decision-making by leveraging stakeholder input and data
    • Thoughtfully considers the impact of decisions, and facilitates resolutions that protect the organization's interests and prioritizes mission/values when conflict or disagreements arise
    • Experience in school operations and/or IT a plus

    • Starting salary ranges from $165,000 to $205,000 per year
