    Job Description

II-VI Optical Systems' designs, manufactures, assembles and tests precision optical systems and components. Our products have been deployed on military platforms such as submarines, tanks, missiles, fighter jets and UAV's. II-VI Optical Systems has grown over the years from a provider of specialty optical materials to a full service provider of optical components and optical systems.

Since its establishment in 1961, II-VI Optical Systems has maintained a commitment to customer satisfaction and continuous improvement. Our commitment to customer satisfaction is achieved by continuous training of our staff with focus on quality, on-time delivery, and cost reduction. From the initial customer inquiry to final delivery, meeting the customer's requirements is our primary objective.

    FUNCTIONS:

The Mechanical Manufacturing Engineer's function is to plan, design and communicate the sequence of a manufacturing operation and to determine the following: (1) required tooling, (2) layout of manufacturing area to be used and (3) necessary equipment utilization and/or modification to machine, assemble, test, package and transport component parts and/or final products in support of the total manufacturing process. Investigate, identify and resolve engineering problems involved in the manufacturing of LightWorks Optics' (LWO) products and provide a smooth transition into routine production.

    JOB REQUIREMENTS:

    Education:

    • Must be imaginative, thorough and practical in providing solutions to technical problems.
    • Must be a self-starter, capable of developing innovative solutions for manufacturing problems involving precision opto-mechanical systems, subsystems, and instruments.
    • Experience will generally include performance in a similar function in an aerospace manufacturing/engineering environment.
    • Experience and hands-on involvement with systems engineering (concept definition, design, performance assessment, etc.) is also required.

Key experience which will enhance effectiveness in position will include:

    • Opto-mechanical assembly techniques.
    • Knowledge of mechanical materials and processes.
    • Computer programming.
    • Test set design.
    • Mechanical and structural analysis.

    Responsibilities:

    • Provide significant support to the manufacturing function in the development and improvement of fabrication processes and methods, as well as developing new testing techniques.
    • Set-up and conduct interferometric testing of reflective and refractive optical assemblies
    • Provide technical direction during integration and assembly operations.
    • Support production activities to achieve shipment schedules through the development and design of methods, processes, specifications, tooling, fixtures, and/or equipment modification in conformance with basic and sound engineering principles, policies and practices.
    • Assure most efficient, economic and productive layout to ensure efficient manufacturability, material flow and machine and labor utilization by planning the sequence of manufacturing operations and the specific procedures required for the fabrication, assembly and/or test of LWO's products.
    • Prepare and carry out plans to change material specifications, manufacturing methods, material or product routine, etc. and/or devise holding mechanisms and required tooling to facilitate product manufacture.
    • Hands-on involvement in the fabrication and test of opto-mechanical systems, subsystems and assemblies, including assembly of complex opto-mechanical systems.
    • Design of assembly and test plans and fixturing.
    • Develop, troubleshoot and evaluate manufacturing processes, opto-mechanical assembly and tests. Troubleshooting and problem resolution on existing designs.
    • Support of Business Development/Marketing in proposal development and job quoting.
    • Interface with customer throughout length of job, from quote to final acceptance.

    • Assure production of quality parts, components and products by verifying machine, equipment and tool efficiency and performance. Investigate and initiate corrective action of problems or deficiencies.
    • Assure timely introduction of new products and/or methods by communicating and documenting required production operations through the preparation of operation sheets, manufacturing data base entries (I.M., BOM, route sheets, etc.).
    • Evaluate schedule milestones in early phases of design (Phase I and Phase II Engineering), monitor costs, and assure quality and serviceability are considered during design and manufacture.
    • Assist in the development and design of new products by providing advice on and determining the productibility of design concepts and the specification requirements that best utilize existing equipment, technologies and manufacturing techniques.
