    Job Description

Verisk is expanding its industry leading fraud detection capabilities into digital media. We are developing a suite of document forensics that will primarily be used by the insurance industry to detect and prevent fraud. The industry is currently undergoing tremendous digital transformation including the use by insurance professionals of digital remote inspection and documentation processes for damaged property. While these digital processes allow insurers to scale and get customers back on their feet quickly following a loss (fire, hurricane, theft, water leak, etc.), they also open new doors for fraudsters to drive up the cost of insurance for everyone and could force insurers to fall back on less efficient pre-digital processes. The document forensics you develop as a key member of our team will ensure the industry can continue to fully embrace digital transformations to quickly pay honest claims quickly and prevent fraud.

As a Document Forensics Specialist, you will be responsible for developing pdf forensics methods. Many of these methods will rely on the interpretation of pdf internals and code. The ideal candidate for the role has extensive expertise in the ISO specification that defines the pdf file format and will be able to define rules and other methods to identify which pdf files are originals and which may have been manipulated using pdf editors such as Adobe Acrobat.

In this role, you will be supported by a team of software developers, machine learning engineers/Data Scientists, and insurance industry experts. Therefore, statistical knowledge, coding, and insurance industry expertise are not required in this role. However, pdf format expertise, creativity, and excellent analytical and communication skills are a must.

This position is part of Verisk Insurance Solutions – Claims and is based in the United States with offices located in Jersey City, NJ; San Francisco, CA; Lehi, UT; Chicago, IL; Middletown, CT; and Columbia, SC. Remote work may be an option for the right candidate.

About the Day to Day Responsibilities of the Role

    • Research technical materials such as ISO file format specifications, academic publications, and other materials to develop novel pdf forensics methods

    • Define technical requirements for the development of pdf fraud/forgery detection methods

    • Analyze pdf files and claims information from within Verisk’s massive data repositories to identify potential fraud patterns

    • Work closely with the Data Science, Software Development, and Insurance Industry experts on the team – providing pdf format expertise, reviewing the results of fraud detection algorithms developed, and helping to prioritize further development

    • As needed, present on document forensics methods to internal and external audiences

  • Qualifications

    Qualifications

    • Bachelor’s or advanced degree

    • Applied work experience with or knowledge of the ISO pdf standard

    • Understanding of how pdf files are constructed and modified

    • Ability to write highly detailed and clear technical requirements for algorithm development

    • Ability to perform simple data analysis and data visualization to identify potential fraud patterns and support recommendations for forensics capabilities to be developed

    • Excellent analytical and communication skills (written and verbal)

    Preferred:

    • Technical expertise in other digital file formats – especially image files such as jpeg, heic, and png

    • Experience working to prevent digital fraud – especially in insurance

    • Ability to write code or use a no code/low code BPM software such as Decisions or Pega to prototype new fraud rules

    • Experience working with machine learning teams or knowledge of basic machine learning concepts
