    Job Description

    INTERNSHIP SUMMARY

    The Engineering Intern will report to the Technology or Analytical Research Manager within the ITW Innovation Center.  The intern candidate will have either a mechanical, electrical, or software engineering focus as their main area of study. The internship position will expose the candidate to the concepts and practices of performing Technology investigations, including Market and IP characterization, as well as providing immersion into the field of analytical testing.  Under direction, the candidate will have the opportunity to explore technologies associated with ITW Automotive, Construction, Food Equipment, Polymer and Fluids, Specialty Products, Test & Measurement and Electronics, as well as Welding businesses.

    The position will involve the combination of primary/secondary research, analysis, interpretation, product testing and reporting on assigned topics.

    INTERNSHIP DETAIL

    This position will be part of a team responsible for Analytical Lab Material analysis within the ITW Innovation Center. This is a minimum 12-week internship located in the ITW Innovation Center on the corporate campus in Glenview, Illinois.

    During the onboarding period, the candidate will learn about ITW corporate and business structures and key technologies, which support the businesses and the role of the Innovation Center in supporting the growth of our businesses.  Time will be spent on discussing the Innovation Center product offerings Including the ITW Customer-Back Innovation Process, Technology Investigation services, and Analytical Support Services.

    TECHNICAL INVESTIGATION: Initial training and discussion on how to conduct technology investigations will be followed by mentored assignments practicing proper primary/secondary technology research through the use of extensive internal and external tools, focused filtering, culminating in the development of final business reports which address the business needs and aid in directing business actions. As is feasible, candidates will participate directly with an ITW business to gain experience in field of educational focus. A project working with an ITW Division will be identified, and the intern will work directly with the business under Innovation Center support. The goal of the project will be to provide the candidate with real world business experience that exhibits increased understanding of the identified technology area.

    ANALYTICAL TRACK: The intern will work under the direction of the analytical chemist or metallurgist performing sample preparation, testing, analysis and reporting on real world business projects.

    REQUIREMENTS:

    • Current Junior or Senior college student, pursuing a degree in Science, Technology, or Engineering. An educational focus on Mechanical, Electrical, or Software Engineering preferred.

    • Strong oral and written communication skills
    • Intellectually curious with a driving interest in technology
