    Job Description

    This position is a paid summer internship responsible for the customer backed development of new and innovative products for the Professional Car Care (PCC) segment.  The position reports to the lead PCC Chemist.  This person is a student of chemistry or chemical engineering in their second to final year looking to gain experience and contribute to the development of novel chemical formulations in the area of protective coatings for the automotive aftermarket.  This person has a passion and curiosity for polymer-organo-metallic structure-property relationships, coating deposition and adhesion, surface science and measurement as well as bringing novel, patented chemical products to market.  

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • Hands on project leadership for customer backed innovation (CBI) projects in the field of polymer-organo-metallic protective coatings
    • To create, develop and scale patentable innovative products for the automotive aftermarket
    • To deliver and articulate structure property relationships using mathematical/statistical models derived from a ‘design of experiments’ rapid prototyping approach to development
    • Develop critical raw material identifications and supply chain relationships with RM vendors
    • Own scale up and new product package transfer, including QC specification setting, to Production and Quality Control of all new product developments
    • Develop objective (i.e. with Gage R&R) test methods as needed for application testing as needed
    • Participate in plant safety teams and share responsibility for chemical hygiene and chemical hazardous communication
    • Other duties may be assigned.

    EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

    • Minimum 1 year schooling in Chemical Engineering (preferred) or Chemistry. 
    • Juniors and seniors on a technical graduate school track preferred. 
    • Previous practical surface science experience considered a plus

    QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS:

    • Strong chemical curiosity coupled with statistical aptitude
    • Strong bench chemistry formulation proficiency along with classic testing instrumentation knowledge and experience

    Considered a Plus

    • Surface science courses and/or practical experience
    • Technical paper authorship
    • Public technical presentation
    • Project management training.  Phase Gate process training.
    • Use of statistical and/or rapid prototyping experience.
    • Design for Six Sigma designation also considered a plus
