Position Summary
The In-House Fiber Optic Splicer is responsible for the installation, splicing, testing, documentation, and maintenance of fiber-optic networks in support of company-owned and client infrastructure. This role ensures all fiber work meets internal quality standards, industry specifications, and customer requirements while supporting construction, restoration, and troubleshooting activities.
Key Responsibilities
Fiber Splicing & Installation
- Perform single-fiber and mass fusion splicing on SM and MM fiber (loose tube, ribbon, and armored cable)
- Install, dress, and secure fiber within closures, FDHs, cabinets, handholes, and splice cases
- Build and maintain F1, F2, and distribution fiber paths
- Restore fiber following damage, relocations, or network upgrades
Testing & Quality Assurance
- Conduct OTDR testing (bi-directional when required) at 1310/1550/1625 nm
- Perform power meter/light source testing and connector inspection/cleaning
- Verify splice loss, reflectance, ORL, and link performance against project specifications
- Identify and resolve issues such as macro-bends, high loss events, and poor splices
Documentation & Reporting
- Create and upload test results using OTDR software and reporting tools
- Maintain accurate as-built documentation, splice records, and fiber allocation records
- Follow company naming conventions, file structure, and QA validation processes
- Update asset and job tracking systems as required
Safety & Compliance
- Follow all OSHA, site-specific, and company safety policies
- Maintain clean, organized, and secure work areas
- Handle fiber materials, chemicals, and tools safely
Team & Operations Support
- Work closely with project managers, engineers, QA, and construction crews
- Support network turn-ups, cutovers, and emergency restorations
- Assist with training and mentoring junior technicians as needed
Required Qualifications
- 2+ years of hands-on fiber optic splicing experience
- Proficiency with fusion splicers, OTDRs, power meters, and inspection scopes
- Strong understanding of fiber construction, splicing methods, and testing standards
- Ability to read and interpret fiber maps, prints, and schematics
- Valid driver's license and ability to travel locally as needed
Preferred Qualifications
- FOA CFOT / CFOS-S or equivalent certification
- Experience with FTTH, OSP, and backbone networks
- Familiarity with internal QA processes and client acceptance standards
- Experience using asset tracking or reporting platforms
Physical & Work Requirements
- Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions
- Lift and carry equipment up to 50 lbs
- Work in confined spaces, aerial environments, and underground vaults
- On-call or after-hours work may be required during outages or cutovers
