    Position Announcement

    Rural Education Professional Tutor

    Independence Community College (ICC) seeks applications for the position of Professional Tutor.

    Position Summary

    The college is seeking a team-oriented professional for the position of Professional Tutor to tutor rural education students in a variety of subjects. The position will include peer tutoring, test reviews, overseeing study groups and implementing problem solving sessions with students. The professional tutor will monitor student progress and provide progress reports to Rural Education Grant Director.

    Qualifications

    Minimum of an Associate’s degree from an institution accredited by a nationally recognized accreditation agency required, with a minimum of one year teaching or tutoring experience; tutoring certification through an accredited program is preferred; familiarity with “at-risk” disadvantaged students, developmental studies, computer-assisted instruction, learning style modalities, and utilization of interactive tutoring. Either a copy of, or authorization for, a Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) is required.

    Working Conditions/Physical Requirements

    The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of a Professional Tutor.     1. Position generally requires light work with occasional lifting of 20 pounds or more, carrying supplies, equipment. The job requires varying amounts of sitting, climbing, kneeling, standing and walking.

    2. This position requires the ability to sit and stand for extended periods of time. It also requires constant hand grasp and finger dexterity; extended standing, walking and repetitive leg and arm movements; occasional bending; reaching forward, side-to-side, downward and overhead; and squatting and kneeling. The ability to communicate verbally with an excellent comprehension of the English language is essential.

    3. Work is generally performed in an indoor setting.

    This is a full-time grant funded position.

    The Professional Tutor reports to the Rural Education Director.

    Primary Responsibilities

    1. Mentor peer tutors in interactive tutoring style, students’ needs identification, and intervention strategies.

    2. Provide individualized instruction in one-on-one and group settings.

    3. Provide Supplemental Instruction to students as required

    4. Monitor student progress and report progress

    5. Develop new services as needed to meet changing student needs in collaboration with ASC staff6. Provide a positive learning environment committed to student success by being receptive to various learning styles found in the comprehensive community college setting and assure equal access to program services for all qualified students.

    General Responsibilities

    1. Assist ASC staff in scheduling tutorial sessions and study halls; monitor and support study halls and other activities.

    2. Tutor participants in both developmental and transfer track courses.

    3. Assist staff in matching appropriate content-area peer tutors with program participants and monitor participants’ progress through periodic assessments.

    4. Provide a positive learning environment committed to ICC student success by being receptive to various learning styles found in the comprehensive community college setting and assure equal access to program services for all qualified students.

    5. Collaborative, collegial, and responsible work habits.

    6. High degree of ethical standards, including adherence to general rules of safety, College procedures, and fair labor standards.

    7. A commitment to high professional standards, including professional growth.

    Qualifications

    1. Associate’s degree from an institution accredited by a nationally recognized accreditation agency.

    2. Minimum of one year of experience teaching or tutoring preferred.

    3. Tutoring certification by an accredited program, such as ATP or CRLA, preferred. Training for obtaining certification will be provided and is required in first year of employment.

    4. Ability to work with multiple students in one setting on a daily basis.

    5. Content area expertise in the assigned field of tutoring.

    6. Interest in imparting knowledge to others.

    7. Electronic media literacy and ability to use a variety of instructional media as necessary.

    8. Familiarity with “at-risk” disadvantaged students, developmental studies, computer-assisted instruction, learning style modalities, and utilization of interactive tutoring preferred.

    9. Experience in overcoming barriers similar to those encountered by first generation, low-income students and students with disabilities preferred.

    10. Ability to communicate effectively with students, staff and community.11. Ability to drive and possession of current valid driver’s license.

    11. Sensitivity to diverse learning styles and developmental needs.

    12. High degree of organizational skills with an ability to manage multiple deadlines, tasks, projects, and assignments.
