    Campus Safety Officer

    Independence Community College (ICC) seeks applications for the positions of Campus Safety Officer. ICC is located in southeast Kansas and serves approximately 3000 full- and part-time students each year through its programs, courses and services and has initiated continuous quality improvement through the AQIP accreditation process.

    Position Summary

    The Campus Safety Officer will work to provide and maintain a safe environment for students, employees, vendors and guests by enforcing college rules and regulations, patrolling campus, checking buildings, and maintaining safe parking conditions anywhere on the college campus. The work schedule may include weekends, evenings and holidays.

    The Independence Community College Campus Security Officer helps provide students, staff, vendors and guests with a safe environment while on the college campus, all the while protecting the college’s assets and property. The position reports directly to the Director of Maintenance, Facilities and Security, and indirectly to the Vice President for Administration and Finance. This person works collaboratively with all functional areas of the college.

    Primary Responsibilities

    1. Ensure a safe campus and protect college assets and property through education, presence and rules enforcement.

    2. Mitigate problems on campus where behavioral problems arise.

    3. Operate and monitor security control equipment to provide area and visitor surveillance.

    4. Patrol assigned areas, including buildings and parking lots. Check for suspicious occurrences and enforce parking rules and regulations.

    5. Respond to and investigate situations when reported. Call the Montgomery County Sherriff or other appropriate law enforcement agencies immediately to investigate suspicious activities or security violations that require specialized intervention.

    6. Check vehicles in college parking lots for authorized parking stickers. Issue parking violation warning and tags, and request towing when necessary.

    7. Check ID cards of persons entering facilities. Deny entry to persons who cannot show either proper identification or cause for being admitted. Provide information and directions. Explain rules and regulations.

    8. Open and close facilities making sure that users have left the premises.

    9. Report security and general maintenance problems to the proper authorities.

    10. Collect and transport money and handle small amounts of cash transactions when necessary. May be responsible for lost and found items.

    11. Maintain daily logs and records of occurrences, complete necessary paperwork, and may use computer terminal to input and retrieve data.

    12. Keep appropriate supervision up to date on latest rulings, regulations and security methods as defined by local, state and federal authorities.

    13. Other duties as assigned by Director of Maintenance, Facilities and Security or other Directors.

    Qualifications

    1. Must be 21 years of age. 2. Must successfully pass a Background check. 3. Must have a valid Kansas driver’s license. 4. Security experience is required.

    2. Formal military or law enforcement training, preferred.

    3. Ability to work in an environment where personal safety may be an issue.

    4. Exhibit a high level of self-confidence and professionalism.

    5. Strong communication and interpersonal skills; possess the ability to communicate effectively with students, staff, vendors and guests with sensitivity to diverse populations, learning styles and developmental needs.

    6. Clarity of thought and expression in oral and written communications.

    7. Ability to utilize time management skills in work, timeliness of reports and communications.

    8. High degree of organizational skills.

    9. Ability to handle stressful situations and overlapping priority demands.

    10. Electronic media literacy; work requires excellent computer skill with great accuracy in input.

    11. Information management skills, exhibiting competency in filing and bookkeeping skills and procedures.

    12. Ability and willingness to work with little or no supervision and in cross-divisional settings.

    13. Collaborative, collegial, and responsible work habits, to include confidentiality; high degree of ethical standards, including adherence to general rules of safety, college procedures and fair labor standards.

    14. A commitment to high professional standards, including professional growth.

    15. Requires knowledge to accomplish comprehensive tasks utilizing established policies and procedures.

    16. Responsiveness to leadership.

    17. Serve as an effective ambassador for the college at all times.

    Position Information

    This is a 12-month full-time position.

    Evenings, weekends, and holidays included.
