    Independence Community College (ICC) is seeking applications for the tenure-track position of Associate Professor of Vocal Music and Choral Director. Independence Community College, a small, rural, residential community college in southeast Kansas, serves approximately 1,000 full- and part-time students each year.     Position Summary

    Responsible for performing a wide variety of duties, including the following: teaching undergraduate music courses as part of both general education offerings and the established Associate of Arts in Music degree track (Music Appreciation, Music Theory, Ear Training/Sight Singing, Applied Private Vocal Instruction, Choir, Vocal Ensembles, and other courses based on credentials); leading student and community choral groups, including the Community Chorale and Chamber Singers; providing regular assessment data from taught courses and cocurricular ensembles; collaborating with Instrumental Music and the Theatre Department on the production of musicals yearly; recruiting for scholarships within the Music Department and for Vocal Music specifically to further grow the program; coordinating and conducting a minimum of two concerts per academic year; and other similar duties necessary to maintain and support vocal music, including budget management. Position requires flexible hours, reflecting day, evening and weekend rehearsal and performance opportunities.

    Qualifications

    Master’s Degree in Music with an emphasis in choral conducting or a master’s degree in a related field with 18 graduate credits in the concentration. The applicant’s degree must be from a regionally accredited institution of higher learning recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. Preferred qualifications include two or more years of community college teaching experience, high school teaching experience, experience working with a diverse student body, and experience with assessment.

    Position Information

    Associate Professor of Vocal Music and Choral Director is full time, 9-month tenure-track faculty position with benefits. Salary is commensurate with education and experience. The instructor reports to the VP for Academic Affairs. Start date is mid-August 2022.

    The Associate Professor of Vocal Music and Choral Director will be under the supervision of the Vice President of Academic Affairs as part of the Arts and Letters Division at Independence Community College. This position requires teaching, conducting, and recruiting for choral ensembles and will also help to fulfill the mission objectives and strategies of the College.

    Primary Responsibilities

    1. Teaching areas include, but are not limited to: Music Appreciation, Music Theory, Sight singing and Ear Training, Applied Voice, Choir, and other courses based on credentials.

    2. Performance responsibilities include: student recitals, concerts and musical support for theatre productions.

    3. Recruit students for the music program, maintaining vocal music library, sound and associated music equipment.

    4. Availability during posted office hours for student advisement and academic assistance. Encouraging student retention, continuity, progress in coursework and program, and student success.

    5. Responsible for working with other faculty on learner and program outcome monitoring of courses and program(s).

    6. Work with other instructors and college personnel to promote ICC and the curricula offerings.

    7. Fiscally responsible for assisting in budget development, budget implementation, and control necessary to deliver instructional programs in an efficient and effective manner to provide access and quality learning experiences.

    8. Assist in development of new programming, including funds development, recruitment, curriculum development and revision.

    9. Maintain and enhance teaching excellence through ongoing professional development by participation through in-service training, workshops, seminars, travel, and publication.

    10. Provide input in the college’s organizational shared governance structure through involvement in committees, councils and supportive activities related to the development and enhancement of the college mission and strategies.

    11. Provide a positive learning environment committed to ICC student success by being receptive to various learning modalities (e.g. on-line, video, accelerated, and hybrid) found in the comprehensive community college setting.

    12. Provide information and assist with external reporting for accreditation, governmental, and state agencies. Complete or provide requested input for reports for external agencies as required.

    13. Work with the instructional team to provide outcomes assessment, follow-up, and improvement(s).

    14. Accompany vocal ensembles when accompanist is unavailable.

    General Responsibilities

    1. Complete reports and communications in a timely manner for internal and external agencies.

    2. Maintain availability based on the needs of the Fine Arts Department.

    3. Ensure the security of all ICC property under the supervision of this role.

    4. Illustrate clarity of thought and expression in oral and written communications.

    5. Exemplify the ability to work with a diverse student population.

    6. Communicate effectively with sensitivity to student learning styles and developmental needs.

    7. Validate responsible work habits through collaborative and collegial social interactions.

    8. Adhere to general rules of safety, procedures, and ethical job standards.

    9. Present expertise in content area and keep abreast of advancements in the domain of vocal music.

    Qualifications

    1. Master’s Degree in Music with an emphasis in choral conducting or a master’s degree in a related field with 18 graduate credits in the concentration.

    2. Computer skills related to vocal music desirable.

    3. An educational philosophy in alignment with a small, rural comprehensive community college.
