    IYI is looking for 2-4 fall/winter KIDS COUNT DATA INTERNS who:

    KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

    The KIDS COUNT Data Intern will support the development and publication of IYI’s 2023 KIDS COUNT Data Book by aggregating research, updating data points, creating visuals from data sets, ensuring data accuracy, and supporting data requests. The ideal candidate has a high level of persistence, precision to detail, flexibility, and dedication to results.

    Interns must have outstanding written and verbal communication skills, experience in research, ability to collaborate with the IYI team, critical reasoning, strong project management skills, and the ability to demonstrate a high degree of independence and initiative. The Intern will work closely with IYI’s KIDS COUNT Data Center Manager.

     CORE RESPONSIBILITIES

    • UPDATING DATA: Updating data points in the Data Book and IYI data publications with the latest information available from secondary sources (including updating disaggregation of data)
    • CREATING VISUALS: Taking data sets and/or tables and creating charts, graphs, maps, and other visual designs
    • DATA CHECKING: Checking the accuracy of all data throughout the Book (e.g., recalculating percentages and rates and double-checking raw numbers against data sources)
    • DATA REQUESTS: Supporting the fulfillment of external and internal data requests for youth-serving professionals, youth-serving organizations, and/or IYI staff

    ABOUT THE DATA BOOK

    The annual Indiana KIDS COUNT® Data Book is one of fifty state-level projects designed to provide a detailed picture of child well-being. To improve the lives of all Indiana children, we provide access to reliable data and resources to empower, educate, and equip those who impact youth. Our annual Data Book provides the best and most recent information on child wellbeing, so that leaders, policymakers, youth workers, and advocates have a go-to source for critical data to create positive change for youth. Throughout the Data Book, data are disaggregated by place, race and ethnicity, age, gender, income, ability, or immigrant status to better understand the outcomes of specific groups of youth.

    CORE SKILLS NEEDED (BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO):

    • Knowledge of statistics and A HIGH CAPACITY FOR DETAIL AND PRECISION WITH DATA. 
    • COMMUNICATION SKILLS both excellent written and verbal. 
    • PROJECT MANAGEMENT SKILLS such as time management, scheduling other people and coordinating locations for events.
    • ABILITY TO MULTITASK WITH SEVERAL PROJECT DETAILS AT ONCE TO ENSURE accurate data products.

    THE IDEAL CANDIDATE WILL HAVE:

    • Experience conducting quantitative research from secondary sources
    • Ability to use and understand complex secondary sources (e.g., U.S. Census Bureau, National Survey of Children’s Health, Indiana Prevention Survey, Household Pulse Survey)
    • Experience with data analysis and manipulating large datasets in [BY2] Excel spreadsheets using pivot tables and filters
    • Ability to interpret data and analyze results using statistical techniques
    • Comfortable with calculating percentages, rates, and other math formulae
    • Ability to identify data points to highlight as a visual
    • Experience creating visuals in either graphic design programs or Excel
    • Understanding of the critical elements of data visualizations (audience, clean, concise, purpose of visual)[BY3]

     

    REQUIREMENTS: BACHELOR’S DEGREE in public policy, human services, or education plus experience in conducting data analysis, using statistical software, and implementing policy and/or advocacy work. Experience or knowledge in fields such as youth development, child welfare, family services, health, and/or juvenile justice services preferred. Master’s degree, preferred.

    TEAM: This position reports to the VICE PRESIDENT OF DATA & EXTERNAL COMMUNICATIONS

    TIME COMMITMENT: 

    • Total of 20 - 30 hours starting November 2022 – January 2023[BY1] 
    • Primarily remote position but may require some in-person commitments

    COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS:  $18 per hour.  This is a part-time position that is not eligible for salary and benefits.

    COVID-19 VACCINATION POLICY

    IYI requires all employees to be "up to date" with COVID-19 vaccines by your employment start date. This would include either:

    • A full primary series of a FDA-approved vaccine and at least one booster vaccine.
    • Or you received the full primary series of an FDA approved vaccine in the last 5 months and are therefore not eligible to receive a booster vaccine. After the 5 months conclude, you will need to receive a booster vaccine or will no longer be "up to date.”

    IYI will consider requests for exemptions from the vaccination policy due to medical conditions or religious belief. You will be required to provide proof of vaccination at the time of hire and/or on your first day of employment. Our vaccination protocols are subject to applicable laws and will be updated from time to time to reflect evolving conditions and federal, state, local, and other applicable health and safety guidelines.
