    POSITION OVERVIEW

    The full-time Community Outreach & Volunteer Coordinator is a new position that is key to theorganization’s growth and success. Their work directly grows the number of helpers andencouragers who support our students: volunteers to help fulfill our mission and meet demandfor our services, and partners who extend our services and deepen our reach. Other than theCEO, this individual will be Indy Reads’ most visible ambassador and representative. This position reports to the Chief Development & Communications Officer.

    The individual in this role will help ensure that the greater Indianapolis community knows about Indy Reads, understands the full scope and impact of our work, and is able to engage as a student,volunteer, business/community partner, or donor. This is an exciting opportunity for acommunity-minded, creative, and process-oriented professional to advance Indy Reads’ missionby expanding existing outreach and volunteer opportunities with new initiatives andpartnerships. The ideal candidate operates with the highest level of integrity, professionalism,and passion for Indy Reads’ mission. They are motivated by Indy Reads’ impact in and with ourcommunity, fueled by curiosity and continual learning, and ready to develop and grow engagement and volunteer initiatives that support every facet of the organization. Hybrid workoptions are available for this position.

    DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

    • Increase awareness of Indy Reads’ full scope of services and programs throughoutCentral Indiana through community events, speaking engagements, individual meetings,and more
    • Strategically and proactively facilitate relationships with communities, organizations,companies, and individuals that could partner with Indy Reads.
    • Create, manage, and grow Indy Reads’ volunteer program by collaborating with all staffto identify needs and opportunities, develop volunteer job descriptions, recruit, screen,train, and place volunteers within Indy Reads’ programs and departments
    • Develop a process for volunteer accountability, recognition, and stewardship.
    • Conduct, will staff, ongoing evaluation of the programs and services delivered by volunteers and implement improvements, as necessary.
    • Ensure volunteer activity is tracked and captured in Indy Reads’ Salesforce database.
    • Ensure that volunteers work in a safe, healthy, and supportive environment in accordance with all appropriate organizational policies & procedures, legislation and regulations, and industry best practices.
    • In coordination with Program Staff, oversee AmeriCorps service members.
    • With support from the Development and Communications Staff, prepare an annual report on the volunteer program's contribution to the organization.
    • Facilitate continual training and development opportunities for volunteers to increaseprofessional skills and overall engagement.
    • Complete other tasks as needed/requested.

     

    REQUIREMENTS

    • 1+ years of directly relevant experience, particularly in developing a volunteer programor coordinating volunteers
    • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite; familiar with Salesforce
    • Committed to advancing our Indianapolis community through Indy Reads’ mission
    • Honest with high integrity, a strong work ethic, and a can-do attitude 
    • Eager to continue learning and growing
    • Proven skills in managing people and projects, highly organized, and a problem-solver
    • A strategic thinker and good listener
    • Cultural sensitivity with excellent verbal and written communication skills
    • Able to work with wide range of internal and external stakeholders, including a diverse student body, colleagues, human services providers, and private sector employers to foster collaboration and partnerships
    • Flexible and adaptable work style that can advance organizational goals
    • Ability to work independently without close oversight, take initiative, develop newprocesses, and manage multiple tasks and projects at a time
    • Creative and forward-thinking, with strong time management skills and exceptionalattention to detail
    • Proficiency in making and giving public presentations
    • Multi-lingual proficiency preferred, not required
    • A sense of humor
    • Committed to ongoing engagement with social justice issues that impact Indy Reads’nstudents and their families
    • Able to assess needs and match volunteer skills to the need

    While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to use their handsto feel objects, tools or controls. The employee is regularly required to stand, walk and sit. Theemployee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities requiredfor this position include close vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception.
