    Job Description

    You will be working as part of the Fire Protection Mechanical Engineering team designing and procuring the plant fire protection systems. You will be preparing technical reports and studies and design documentation, performing calculations using engineering software and preparing specifications for complex mechanical equipment and supporting systems. The ideal candidate will have solid experience in fire protection system design and will be capable of developing design documents, including piping and instrument diagrams (P&IDs) and equipment data sheets, which incorporate the applicable design requirements, including nuclear safety requirements. You will be interfacing and coordinating with other engineering disciplines and the client in the development of the design. Experience in the construction field is a plus.

    JOB DUTIES: The primary role of the Senior Fire Protection Mechanical Engineer is to collect the Fire Protection, safety, and other data and requirements for Fire Protection and/or other support systems. Design the system and specify the equipment to meet the applicable design requirements. Procure the equipment in accordance with applicable QA requirements. The Senior Mechanical Fire protection engineer coordinates with the engineering group and other disciplines (including AHJ) in developing the detailed system design and specifying equipment in a team environment. The Fire Protection engineer prepares reports, equivalencies, and exemptions in resolving open technical issues related to fire protection. The Fire Protection engineer develops and revises piping and instrument diagrams, formal calculations, and equipment data sheets and specifications in completing the detailed design for the system, including equipment selection.  This position will also support resident engineering in performing walk-downs, assisting with compensatory measures, and troubleshooting.  The Fire Protection mechanical engineer supports the associated safety analyses and hazard evaluations. In addition, it will be required that the candidate have excellent communication skills (both verbal and written), and can be the “face” of Bechtel, promoting our leadership, quality, and safety values, to external partners including vendors, construction companies, and other subcontractors.

    The UPF project works on a 9-80 schedule with every other Friday off. Start times are flexible but the standard workweek is Monday - Thursday from 7:00 am to 4:30 pm. The schedule on working Fridays is: 7:00 am-3:30 pm.

    BASIC QUALIFICATIONS: • BS degree in Fire Protection Engineering from an accredited university or college with a minimum of 5-7 years of related experience. • Related experience includes, but is not limited to, P&IDs, calculations, and specifications for Mechanical/Fire Protection systems and equipment on power plants, refineries, or chemical process facilities. • Must be a United States citizen. • Must be able to complete and pass a pre-employment drug screen and background check, including verification of employment and education. • Must be able to obtain a site security badge for access to the worksite. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: •    Working knowledge of NFPA, IBC, IFC, DOE, OSHA Regulatory Standards. •    Understanding of construction roles, practices, and economics. •    Practical work experience in equipment design and procurement. •    Ability to utilize office automation tools effectively. •    Knowledge of industry and regulatory guides, codes, and standards. •    Broad knowledge of the application of Mechanical engineering design principles. •    Nuclear experience in working with procedures meeting quality assurance programs such as ASME-NQA-1. •    Knowledge of engineering planning and control methods including computerized methods. •    Strong verbal and written communication skills. •    Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office products (i.e., Word, PowerPoint, Excel). •    Extensive knowledge of fire protection engineering work processes, procedures, and specifications. Proven leadership or supervisory experience. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: •    PE in Fire Protection •    Master’s Degree in Fire Protection •    Experience working with vendors on procurement of equipment. •    Familiarity Fire Protection software such as HASS, FDS, CFAST, or other. •    Experience in CGD and/or Environmental Equipment Qualification is desirable but not required. •    Experience with Fire Protection system design and deliverables e.g. P&ID, Line Designation Tables, Equipment List, Calculations, Specifications, etc. •    Understanding of ASME NQA-1 requirements for procurement
