Position Description
The Installation Technician is responsible for upfitting, fabricating, troubleshooting, and maintaining all types of Maintenance of Way (MOW) equipment, specializing in hi-rail trucks, cranes, and other equipment related to the railroad industry.
Major Areas of Responsibility
- Perform upfitting of bodies & equipment, including modifications on hi-rail trucks, cranes, and other equipment.
- Have a good mechanical background and be able to demonstrate the associated skills.
- Read and follow installation instructions, plumbing/wiring schematics and component drawings.
- Diagnose and evaluate problems with equipment; make repairs in a timely manner
- Knowledge in DC electrical, hydraulics and pneumatics
- Document work performed and time to complete the tasks.
- Communicate with parts department on needed components.
- Be able to plan ahead and layout out jobs prior to assembly.
- Use power tools and measuring equipment to properly install components and assemblies.
- Keeps shop area and equipment neat and clean.
- Be able to work alone and in teams and have a solid team-oriented mindset.
- Have a working knowledge and understanding of safety requirements and follow them.
- Follow MSDS handling and PPE guidelines when using any chemicals, substances and materials.
- Dispose of all waste oils and fluids in designated locations/containers to ensure EPA compliance.
Minimum Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent required
- Valid driver’s license required; Class A or B CDL is preferred, but not required
- Effective verbal and written communication skills.
- Demonstration of mechanical abilities
- Must have your own basic tools.
Work Requirements
- Dependable and consistent attendance/punctuality
- Ability to continue to develop a working knowledge of hydraulic, pneumatic, and electrical systems
- Welders may need to be certified in specific welding processes (e.g., MIG, TIG, Stick) based on the materials used and the standards required for railroad applications.
- Ability to pay strict attention to detail and follow written/verbal instructions
- Ability to accurately read a tape measure and apply it to the job being performed
- Understand and accurately interpret/follow laws, rules, regulations, and other railroad/Omaha Track guidelines
- Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with a diverse group
- Ability to safely drive a DOT regulated vehicle (strongly preferred); ability to drive a vehicle/operate equipment
- Ability to obtain/maintain a DOT medical card, required for DOT regulated vehicle operation (strongly preferred)
- Ability to work in both indoor and outdoor environments, subject to all elements and conditions
- Ability to regularly lift/carry 50lbs; team lift/carry up to 100lbs
- Ability to meet all functional requirements including, but not limited to: sitting, kneeling, standing, walking, bending, squatting, climbing, finger dexterity, and reaching above/below shoulders
- Able to change easily from one task to another of a different nature and deal with competing demands
- Able to work overtime when demand requires
