    Job Description

    The Grants Writer reports to the Chief Development Officer and is responsible for the research, development, and management of foundation, corporate, and government grants proposals and reports. The primary responsibilities of this position include prospect research; grant development, writing and production; grants management, tracking and reporting; supporting funder relationships; and coordination with development team members and Instituto staff to accomplish grant related goals. In addition to their primary responsibilities, this position supports Instituto’s Development initiatives and other fundraising responsibilities as needed.

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

    INCOME GENERATION 

    • Responsible for creation and implementation of a grants program in collaboration with the Chief Development Officer
    • Write, produce, and submit compelling and accurate LOIs, proposals, and reports to philanthropic and corporate foundations along with local and national government granting agencies
    • Conduct pre-proposal strategy meetings for grants and work with leadership team and other Instituto’s staff to ensure timely and accurate submission of all LOIs, proposals, and reports to funders
    • Monitor proposal and report submissions by development staff or Instituto colleagues when appropriate
    • Develop and manage internal processes regarding grants including a grants calendar, acknowledgement of grants received, and communication with key staff

    RESEARCH AND PLANNING _

    • Oversee prospect research to ensure that the pipeline for new grants is continuously replenished
    • Maintain data and demographic library, working with Insituto’s leadership team to ensure updated statistical information on programs, communities, and policy issue areas used in Instituto’s proposals
    • Provide regular goal and progress reports for staff, finance department, and Board of Directors
    • Maintain accurate and complete electronic and paper files related to grants and funder relations, including utilizing Raiser’s Edge as a strategic grant management tool
    • Initiate, maintain, evaluate, and recommend procedures and systems for improved management of the grants process

    RELATIONSHIP DEVELOPMENT

    • In collaboration with the Chief Development Officer, and President and CEO, support relationships with philanthropic and corporate foundations including conversations and meetings with funders to identify best opportunities for grant proposals, site visits, and other cultivation as necessary
    • Foster relationships with the philanthropic funding community through participation in relevant industry events, as well as organizational engagement and outreach

    DEVELOPMENT SUPPORT_

    • Participate in the organization’s annual gala and other fundraising events by supporting the solicitation of sponsorships, auction donations, and general event management
    • Support the execution of benefits, recognition, and general requests from funders and other key partners
    • Be an active contributor to Development Department activities as needed and directed

    PROGRAM MANAGEMENT AND OTHER   _

    • Attend relevant committee and community meetings, representing Instituto to the public
    • Assist with government contract administration as needed and directed
    • Participate in staff meetings as needed
    • Participate in the execution of fundraising and donor cultivating events as needed and directed
    • Supports the overall work of the Development Department
    • Attend workshops and other skill-building activities as appropriate
    • Other duties as assigned

     

  • Qualifications

    Qualifications

    • Interest in contributing to Instituto’s mission and growth of its programs
    • Bachelor’s degree in a closely related field
    • 3 years of prior development experience, particularly in grant writing and grant management
    • Experience managing proposals, reports, and systems for large grant portfolios including coordinating with team members to produce quality products and managing grants calendar and deadlines
    • Knowledge of grant submission and administration processes
    • Proven track record of funded grant proposals of $100,000+, experience with government grants highly desired
    • Demonstrated advanced writing skills in a range of situations such as complex proposals as well as simple channels of communication
    • Experience capturing organization spirit and mission in writing
    • Experience utilizing Raiser’s Edge or other donor databases in grant management
    • Able to function both independently and as a member of a team
    • Excellent, professional communication skills and ability to work with multiple stake holders to move a project along to completion
    • Pro-active problem solving skills
    • Ability to maintain detailed-oriented nature in a fast-paced environment
    • Able to occasionally work long hours and some evening and weekends as necessary
    • Proficient with Microsoft Office applications
    • Demonstrated cultural and economic sensitivity
