    Job Description

    BASIC FUNCTION

    The Chief Financial Officer (CFO) reports directly to the President and CEO, leads and directs all finance and accounting units. They ensure timely delivery of financial and statistical reports as required.  The CFO also works with groups including government agencies, community organizations, and public and private institutions to maintain key relationships that promote the effective and efficient use of resources to advance Instituto’s goals.  As a part of the executive management team, the CFO plays a key role in advancing the mission of the organization. 

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES ·      Strategy & Leadership

    ·         Advise the CEO and senior management team of financial planning, budgeting, cash flow, operating plans, and policy matters

    ·         Drive the organization’s fiscal strategy and work collaboratively with stakeholders to achieve organizational strategic goals

    ·         Report to Instituto and school’s board and finance committees on organization financials  

    ·         Engage the finance committees of the board of directors to develop short-, medium-, and long-term financial plans 

    ·         Represent the organization externally, with key partners and foster ongoing positive relations with the organization’s key constituencies including board members,  finance committees, financial institutions, investors, foundation, executives, auditors, public officials, legal, accounting firm relationships

    ·         Develop five year financial projections based on Strategic Plans

    ·         Develop capital budget

    ·         Foster an environment of innovation and continuous improvement

    ·         Maintain an atmosphere of collaboration and communication among all areas of the organization

    ·         Take a leadership role in other major projects where the CFO’s skills and/or experience are critically important

    _Operations & Finance   _

    ·         Direct the preparation of all financial reports, including income statements, balance sheets, tax returns, reports for government regulatory agencies and reports for grantors

    ·         Oversee risk management for organization according to contract and regulatory requirements

    ·         Inspire and hold accounting and finance team accountable for a high level of performance, team work and customer service

    ·         Ensure timeliness, accuracy, and usefulness of financial and management reporting to funders, foundations, and Board of Directors

    ·         Coordinate audits and proper filing of tax returns

    ·         Oversee the compliance of government rules and guidelines, including tax filings, grants, and reporting

    ·         Oversight of key treasury responsibilities including cash management, executing required financing, managing investments, review of monthly finance statements and ensuring compliance of all internal controls

    ·         Develop and implement metrics to measure progress toward strategic goals

    ·         Review and analyze budget revenues and expenses to forecast cash flow projections

    ·         Analyze operational performance, budgetary issues, financial performance at macro and micro levels and help develop plans to anticipate and address deviations or shortfalls

    ·         Remain up to date on nonprofit audit best practices and state and federal law regarding nonprofit operations.

    _Team Leadership _

    ·         Supervise staff, align department goals with the organization’s strategic plan

    ·         Promote a culture of high performance and continuous improvement that values learning and a commitment to quality

    ·         Direct the goals and priorities of direct reports, establish performance metrics, and monitor and evaluate outcomes

    ·         Conduct performance appraisals, provide for instruction and training of employees, and conduct disciplinary/counseling activities as necessary

    ·         Coach and ensure staff members receive timely and appropriate training and development

    ·         Develop learning opportunities for employees

    ·         Ensure clients, vendors, suppliers, and staff are treated with professionalism, integrity and urgency

    ·         Other duties as assigned by President/CEO

  • Qualifications

    Qualifications

    QUALIFICATIONS

    • MBA in business management/administration, Accounting, or Finance required
    • CPA Preferred
    • 5+ years experience as CFO or equivalent
    • Experience managing a budget of at least $15 million
    • Demonstrated use of entrepreneurial spirit and approach
    • Significant experience in or knowledge of non-profit accounting, including complex foundation and grant accounting, compliance, and reporting
    • Knowledge and understanding of the audit process
    • Experience with finance and accounting software packages
    • Experience with real estate accounting a plus
    • Demonstrated leadership ability, team management, and interpersonal skills
    • Excellent analytical and abstract reasoning skills, plus excellent organization skills
    • Ability to effectively supervise staff, build teams, train and coach others
    • Exceptional organization and time management skills
    • Exceptional “customer service” approach
    • Excellent oral and written communication skills
    • Strong project management skills, attention to detail and effective management of multiple projects at one time
    • Ability to adhere to deadlines, react to unpredictable events quickly and efficiently, be resourceful, manage conflict and challenges
    • Advanced skills with Microsoft Office, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and the internet
    • Ability to work evenings and weekends as needed, have a flexible schedule
