About Arts & Learning Conservatory
The Arts & Learning Conservatory (ALC) is an award-winning nonprofit dedicated to making high-quality arts education equitable and accessible to all children, regardless of socioeconomic background. Since 2004, ALC has reached over 30,000 students across Southern California through after-school theatre, music, and technical arts programs.
Position Overview
We are seeking skilled and passionate Musical Theatre Teachers with experience in winds, brass, percussion, and/or string instruction to lead engaging after-school programs for elementary students (Grades 3–8). The ideal candidate will have a strong musical background, the ability to teach multiple instruments, and a commitment to nurturing students of all levels. Candidates will prepare students for school-based performances, teach foundational music concepts, and manage group instruction in diverse classroom settings.
Key Responsibilities
Teach and manage after-school musical theatre or music-focused classes with emphasis in:
Winds/Brass: flute, clarinet, alto saxophone, trumpet, trombone
Percussion
Strings: violin, viola, cello
Instruct students on instrument handling, sound production, note reading, rhythm, posture, and intonation.
Conduct classes in 2/4, 3/4, and 4/4 time signatures confidently.
Utilize engaging techniques to teach rhythm, key signatures, and performance readiness to young learners.
Differentiate instruction to support both beginners and mixed-level students in ensemble settings.
Prepare students for school concerts and performances throughout the year.
Create an inclusive classroom that encourages confidence and creativity.
Communicate effectively with school personnel, program directors, and families as needed.
Follow ALC curriculum guidelines and safety protocols.
Required Qualifications
Minimum 2 years of experience teaching children instrumental music (school or community-based setting)
Comfortable teaching multiple instruments or focused groups (winds, percussion, or strings)
Bachelor’s degree in Music Education or Performance (or currently pursuing)
Strong classroom management and organizational skills
Ability to teach rhythm, pitch, and performance prep in a developmentally appropriate way
Experience with beginner instruction including tone production, posture, bow hold (for strings), etc.
Ability to manage intonation and ensemble dynamics with mixed-level students
CPR certification (or willingness to obtain)
Live Scan background check and TB clearance (facilitated by ALC)
Preferred Experience
Experience conducting in varied time signatures (2/4, 3/4, 4/4)
Familiarity with musical theatre or performance-based education
Fluency in reading music and music theory
Experience preparing students for public performances or showcases
Compensation & Benefits
Pay: Starting at $35/hour DOE
