    Job Description

    The Northwestern Medicine INNOVATION INTERNSHIP presents a valuable opportunity for undergraduate and graduate students to gain an experiential education and for Northwestern Medicine to benefit from the service, skills and knowledge that undergraduate and graduate students can offer.

    THESE ARE PAID SUMMER INTERNSHIPS AT DOWNTOWN CHICAGO CAMPUS.  The Innovation internship provides an unparalleled experience for select aspiring healthcare leaders throughout the Northwestern Medicine system.

    The summer intern responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

    1. Uphold the mission, vision, and values of Northwestern Medicine.
    2. Successfully complete projects and work tasks assigned.
    3. Develop a working knowledge of hospital operations to a degree that allows for the successful completion of projects supporting a variety of hospital operations.
    4. Develop working relationships with staff and management that allows for successful business interactions across all levels of the organization.
    5. Participation in activities designed for development of interns during their assignment at Northwestern Medicine; which include:
    • New Employee Orientation
    • Networking Opportunities with Senior Leadership
    • Networking Opportunities with other college internship groups within the Northwestern Medicine hospital system
    • Professional Workshops
    • Departmental Presentations led by IS leadership
    • Completion of Intern Innovation Challenge Project & Individual Presentation

    The summer interns will be exposed to all NM’s innovation efforts and will be assigned at least one innovative solution evaluation and pilot the activation. 

    Day to day activities will include:

    • Participation in meetings with physician, nurses and administrators to evaluate and plan activities
    • Hosting events:
      • Innovation Champions Program - engaging physicians and nurses across NM in the innovative work we do by hosting workshops, guest speaker events, and connecting them to the innovative projects we have to gain exposure
      • Innovation Challenge Grant – annual competitive grant process where anyone at NM can submit an innovative idea and 3 finalists are selected to go through a 6 week program to take their idea and develop a pitch to present to our shark-tank style judges to win $50k to activate their idea.
      • Collaboration Events – We host groups from within NM and outside to explore innovative topics, review innovative solutions, and network to solve the biggest problems in healthcare
    • Attending conferences/webinars to evaluate latest innovations in the market
    • Collaborating with various departments across NM to improve experiences through technology

    Qualifications

    REQUIRED: 

    • Candidates must have a High School Diploma or the General Equivalent, and have completed at least 2 semesters in an undergraduate program or 30 credit hours.
    • The most promising applicants demonstrate superior academic performance, leadership skills and relevant healthcare experience.
    • Interns project maturity, professionalism, and initiative.
    • Candidates must be comfortable in complex organizations and display a passion for a career in healthcare.
