J Harlan Group is currently conducting a search for a Data Engineer at a prominent Asset Manager in their NYC Technology Development Center.

The Data Engineering team is at the forefront of innovation as they embark on building Data Science, Predictive Analytics and Machine Learning capabilities to transform large amounts of structured and unstructured data such as text, time series, and events into machine-readable knowledge fueling applications and the investment decision making process. This is a very young team, enabling you to make an impact from the onset.

Principal Responsibilities:

The team is tasked with building next generation data analysis platforms and are responsible for the ingestion and processing of large, disparate datasets and application of advanced statistical and machine learning methods to produce models and prescriptive data that result in better decisions by their Portfolio Managers, Analysts, and Traders, Quants and / or applications.

• Design, develop, test, and deploy elegant software solutions across the firm
• Partner with business leaders to define priorities and deliver custom solutions
• Engineer world-class products with maximum efficiency and agility
• Enable improvement of the engineering team through shaping of tools, processes and standards
• Adopt new technologies to improve existing frameworks of data flow and monitoring
• Interact with Investment professionals to understand their workflows and requirements
• Collaborate with your engineering manager to enable a fit-for-purpose application portfolio consistent with the target architecture and operating model
• Produce comprehensive, usable dataset documentation and metadata
• Evaluate and make decisions around dataset implementations designed and proposed by peer data engineers
• Ensure excellent customers relationships

The ideal candidate would have a background and a deep passion for working with data and developing software to address data processing challenges

Required Experience:

• Advanced Degree in one or more of the following disciplines: Computer Science, Mathematics, Statistics, Economics, Computing, Quantitative Finance or other Quantitative, Numerical or Computing discipline
• Proficiency within one or more programming languages including Python, Java, C, C++, C#, R or JavaScript.
• Proficiency with multiple data platforms including RDBMS, NoSQL, MongoDB, Spark, Hadoop
• Experience with some of the following areas: Distributed Computing, Natural Language Processing, Machine Learning, Cloud Platform Development, Networking, and/or REST Service Development
• Strong written and verbal communications skills
• Ability to manage multiple tasks and thrive in a fast-paced team environment
