    Chicago Private Equity - Investment Management Firm

    J Harlan Group is currently conducting a search for an experienced and highly motivated Data Engineer at a prominent Chicago Private Equity - Investment Manager.

    The Data Engineer will be a primary stakeholder for the Asset Management team. The Analyst will clean, organize, and synthesize real asset data, and other transportation datasets, while identifying insights that will enhance the team’s ability to present relevant information internally and to current and potential investors, partners, and customers. The function of this role will highly depend on the applicant’s ability to operate as the liaison between teams, most notably Asset Management and Investor Relations teams, for all data cleanup, entry, audit, analysis, and reporting.

    Key Responsibilities:

    The Data Engineer will be responsible for:

    • Owning and creating bi-weekly, monthly, and quarterly reporting by building dashboards with key metrics and actionable insights for the Asset Management and wider teams within the firm.
    • Working closely with the firm’s teams – Investments, Asset Management, Investor Relations, and Strategy & Research – to aggregate, clean, synthesize, audit, and import into the firm’s master database.
    • Conducting an initial audit of all datasets to ensure that imported data is correct and corroborates with changes that occur in data tapes as they are updated.
    • Creating a process for and auditing all data on a continual basis to ensure information is not only accurate but timely.
    • Working closely with Data Science, Engineering, and Technology Services to create streamlined data export and visualization processes for ease-of-use and access to relevant data.
    • Being the gatekeeper for all data requests and executing the most efficient method to prioritize clean-up and entry.
    • Ideating and assisting with the productization of internal and external data technology tools and products.
    • Identifying, presenting, and aggregating new performance metrics, owning the process from start to finish.
    • Working closely with the Investor Relations team to put together charts and tables based on ongoing and specific investor requests.
    • Becoming an expert in data visualization following established principles and focusing the message of all presentation materials of the company.

    Abilities:

    The Data Engineer must be able to:

    • Identify the data supporting a given chart and work with both data tables and charts, while seamlessly going between number representation to visual representation.
    • Aggregate and clean large raw datasets, and work closely with the Asset Management team and Data Science to efficiently import while testing data outputs to mitigate any discrepancies.
    • Be very detail oriented and have a solid understanding of data and numbers as well as spreadsheet principles and data slicing techniques.
    • Be a power user of at least one visualization tool (PowerBi/Tableau/Plotly or similar) and of Excel spreadsheets.
    • Create efficient and repeatable processes to handle data import and entry requests from the wider team.
    • Quickly identify discrepancies and present solutions and/or explanations to discrepancies while working closely with Asset Management and Data Science on repairing discrepancies.
    • Handle ad hoc requests and then create processes and efficiencies that will allow any individual on the team to easily and autonomously access the information needed.
    • Recommend metrics and visualizations based on observed data trends and assist teams in building the best presentation of this information.
    • Avidly communicate and present information in an easily consumable manner.
    • Collaborate and ask LOTS of questions.

    The ideal candidate would have a background including:

    • 2-4 years of data analytics experience in industries that typically utilize large datasets such as healthcare, ad-tech, media, etc. Investment banking or finance is a plus but not required
    • Demonstrated knowledge of SQL, Tableau, Excel, PowerBI, Python preferred but not required
    • Strong academic record
    • Excellent analytical, written, and verbal communication skills
    • Extremely detail oriented
    • Ability to manage a process from start to finish with true ownership in areas that might be new to both the individual and even the firm
    • Ability to multi-task and prioritize in a fast-paced environment
    • Excellent interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to work effectively as part of a team
    • Ability to take direction but also to be independent
    • Willingness to take on what’s needed to support the team
    • Tenacious/persistent - goes the extra mile

    Education:

    • Strong academic record and a bachelor’s or higher degree
