  • Responsibilities

    The CASH Campaign of Maryland provides direct services and advocates for policies that increase the financial security of low to moderate-income individuals and families in Baltimore City and across Maryland. In collaboration with a broad set of partners and volunteers, The CASH Campaign provides a range of high impact programs that help people build financial security, reduce poverty, and return millions of dollars back to low-income people and communities. These programs reach over 20,000 households annually and include free tax preparation, financial coaching, financial education, and public benefits assistance. The CASH Campaign works to build a network of organizations and practitioners dedicated to promoting financial security and economic mobility for low-income people in Maryland and across the region. This is accomplished by hosting convenings, providing technical assistance, and supporting the growth of other coalitions.

    POSITION DESCRIPTION

    The Public Policy Intern provides support to the policy research and advocacy program and reports to the Director of Policy. CASH promotes policies that improve the financial security of working families through research, policy analysis, and legislative advocacy. CASH works primarily at the state-level, though some federal work is possible.

    WORK LOCATION : Hybrid. Requires 2 - 3 days per week in Baltimore, MD office. Ability to travel to Annapolis, MD as needed.

    SPECIFIC TASKS/RESPONSIBILITIES

    • Research policy issues that impact access to savings, mainstream financial services, and program funding for asset building organizations.
    • Analyze policy options available at state and federal level.
    • Prepare short issue briefs on policy topics.
    • Monitor bills and prepare summary reports.
    • Support Director of Policy in setting up policy meetings and distributing materials.
    • Support external communications for policy efforts including action alerts, website content, and e-newsletter articles.
    • Represent CASH as requested at coalition meetings to share CASH perspectives and coordinate policy actions with other advocates.
    • Support CASH-run events including lobby days, town halls, listening sessions, focus groups, and Money Power Day.
    • Take notes at internal and external meetings as requested.
    • Other duties as assigned.

    POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

    • Minimum requirement of Bachelor's degree. Preferred majors include public policy, public administration, political science, government, psychology, social work, pre-law, Community Organization & Advocacy, or related fields
    • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite
    • Excellent writing, legal/policy research, and communication skills
    • Highly motivated, self-starter
    • Ability to meet deadlines and juggle multiple tasks
    • Ability to work independently in a fast-paced office and in Annapolis during the legislative session (January-April)
    • Commitment to CASH's mission and to lifting the voices of marginalized individuals and groups.
    • Ability to move or lift 1-25 lbs
    • Reliable transportation
    • Internship: August 2024 to May 2025.
    • Office Hours: 9am – 5pm
    • 2 – 3 days per week in office (Baltimore, MD)
    • Ability to travel to Annapolis as required

    COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS

    • $15.00 per hour

    • Eligible for accrued sick days
