Join Jack Link's as an Associate Food Scientist Intern during the summer of 2023 Alpena, SD As our food scientist intern, you will have the opportunity to gain hands-on experience through formal and informal training, managing projects, attending events, networking with fellow interns, working with key Jack Link’s leaders and team members. At the completion of your internship, you will conduct a final presentation on your internship experience.
Our goal is to place dynamic and driven students in our business to manage projects which support strategic goals, while learning about the real business world and gaining valuable hands-on experience.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Write, observe, obtain measurements, organize data and aid in the evaluation of R&D new product development and process improvement tests.
Communicate instructions and coordinate with various plant departments to follow tests through the system
Prepare test samples for shipment to appropriate parties
Observe and conduct FSQ tests
Measure and evaluate process variation and yields. Investigate process deviations. Measurements include Physical Properties like weight, diameter and length; Chemical Properties like Aw, pH and moisture; Temperature, Humidity, Sensory Panels, and shelf life studies. Interpret data and report or act on results.
Evaluate process data
Maintain various process control and R&D documents, such as plant allergen washdown charts, blend calculator, formula master, label setup sheets and seasoning specifications. Prepare written specifications for new products and changes to Food Safety & Quality (FSQ.)
Observe and assist with new product initial production runs in the plant; interacting with purchasing , operations, quality & engineering departments
Use specialty software to generate needed information
Maintain records of samples in storage. Keep storage areas neat and orderly
Participate in In-House technical presentations by ingredient & equipment suppliers
Participate in the innovation process for new idea generation
Qualifications
Knowledge of food/meat processing and/or preparation
Basic Understanding of statistics
Proficiency in Microsoft Excel
Team Player with excellent communication skills
Ability to work in cold/hot/wet conditions
Intense natural curiosity, good listener, strong work ethic and exacting attention to detail
