    Job Description

    OB TITLE: Product Engineer DEPARTMENT: Engineering REPORTS TO: Engineering Manager FLSA STATUS: Exempt

    SUMMARY: Oversee and improve production processes in the plant. Engineering aptitude, high attention to detail, and the ability to optimize production processes for maximum efficiency are required.

    DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

    1. Plan, manage, and oversee all elements of engineering on a daily basis to produce high quality products
    • Assess, analyze and implement improvements to the production process to increase speed and efficiency without compromising quality

    • Investigate problems, analyze root causes and derive resolutions to reduce downtown and outages and maximize productivity of machinery and workers

    • Ensure all steps of production run smoothly and efficiently; develop best practices to improve production capacity, quality and reliability

    • Work closely with Plant Manager to ensure machinery is operated properly and within manufacturers guidelines, as well as provide guidance on the optimum number of workers required to man production lines

    • Determine which machines, tools, equipment, etc. will be used and where they will be stationed in the facility

    • Design and implement cost reduction initiatives and quality control measures that effectively monitor products and ensure parts are produced to customer specifications

    1. Create, promote and adhere to a culture of compliance
    • Identify unsafe operations and practices and report any violations to the safety committee immediately

    • Follow and adhere to all state, federal and company enforced safety rules, regulations and training

    • Maintain proper engineering designs and records for plant, property and equipment

    1. Manage plant, property and equipment capital expenditure projects from concept to completion and within established return on investment hurdle rate
    • Recommend new technologies that contribute to operating efficiencies and improve earnings

    • Solicit bids and work closely with vendors to ensure best price and timely delivery of purchased items

    • Provide advice and guidance on how to improve production by upgrading or supplementing equipment currently in use

    1. Hire, manage and train technicians to maintain equipment for maximum safety and efficiency

    2. Manage engineering personnel and assign tasks as needed

    3. Stay current with product specifications, engineering technology and production processes

    QUALIFICATIONS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.     EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE: B.S degree in mechanical engineering; master’s degree and professional engineer (PE) licensure preferred. Five to ten years proven experience in production/industrial engineering, with managerial experience preferred. Prior experience implementing lean manufacturing concepts, 5S and quality controls.

    LANGUAGE ABILITY: Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information to top management, vendors, customers and creditors. Bi-lingual in Spanish a plus.

    MATH ABILITY: Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.

    REASONING ABILITY: Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.

    SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: Directly supervises employees in the engineering department. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include training, directing work, appraising performance, communication with management and addressing and resolving problems
