    Job Description

    Under the supervision of the Director of Disability Services, the Independent Living Skills Instructor provides one-on-one instruction and support to individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities to assist them in living in their own home or working towards moving from their family’s home.

    Instructors coach and role-model activities of daily living including, but not limited to, morning and evening routines, personal hygiene, cleaning, laundry, daily chores, meal planning, cooking, budgeting, shopping, healthy nutrition, social interactions, community outings, and use of public transportation. Primary instruction takes place in the individual’s home and local community.

    The Independent Living Skills Instructor understands and assists in meeting the mission and service goals of Jewish Family and Children’s Services and works within the limitations of the Agency’s resources and performs all duties in compliance with agency standards.

    ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

    1. Works with the Director of Disability Services and program participants to develop an Individual Service Plan (ISP) to assist clients in reaching their highest level of independent living.

    a. Provides support to develop and follow a consistent training schedule of independent living skills with individual as determined by their ISP.

    b. Promotes and teaches self-advocacy, personal, domestic, medical, financial, social/recreational, communication, and behavior management skills to maintain independence.

    c. Completes daily written documentation of activities as assigned, including plans, progress notes and reports.

    d. Has ability to exercise mature judgment and relate to individuals in a warm and caring manner.

    e. Attend regularly scheduled staff meetings.

    1. Safeguards client privacy and confidentiality, making sure protected health information is secured.

    2. Maintains good working relationships with all staff to help the whole JFCS Agency operate as a positive, coordinated unit.

    3. Meets agency standards for performance by delivering all work to a high-quality standard.

    4. Complies with agency policy and procedures for health and safety standards of its’ clients, employees and of the facility.

    5. Record all time spent working accurately. Time records are JFCS records, required by law and JFCS policy to be absolutely accurate. All meal periods and rest breaks are to be taken as required by law.

    JOB QUALIFICATIONS

    • Bachelor’s degree in human services related field preferred.

    • At least two (2) years’ experience working with adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities required.

    • Must pass a criminal background check.

    • Must have experience using MS Office applications and general computer skills.

    • Knowledge of Jewish community, holidays and cultural activities is not required but is helpful when coordinating or participating in activities with the Jewish Community.

    PHYSICAL DEMANDS

    The physical demands described below are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

    • The ability to lift, carry, bend, stoop, push or pull.

    • Required to ascend/descend stairs.

    • Regular use of hands requiring dexterity in using the telephone, computer keyboard, mouse or calculator.

    • Exposure to low to moderate noise levels characteristic of working in an office, home, and community environment.

    • The person in this position requires communication with clients with disabilities, client families, JFCS colleagues and outside customers regarding the program. Must be able to exchange accurate information in varying situations.

    • May be required to lift up to 30 pounds.

    • Must be able to remain in a stationary position 95% of the time.
