    The Planning and Environmental Affairs Department is seeking a motivated graduate intern to join its team.  This opportunity is ideal for students pursing a graduate degree in Environmental Science, Ecology, Natural Resources Management, Public Administration or other related field.  The Planning and Environmental Affairs Department manages all environmental-related programs, including Airport planning and environmental review, regulatory compliance, water and air quality, site remediation, hazardous material handling and natural resources protection. The department interfaces with other Airport Authority departments to assess potential environmental impacts of all proposed projects.

     

    The Airport Authority is committed to environmental sustainability by fostering a culture of environmental accountability through its programs and projects. The Airport Authority is focused on the triple-bottom line of financial, social, and environmental impact. This internship will provide an opportunity to gain hands-on experience assisting with various environmental programs and sustainability initiatives, as well as exposure to the aviation industry and personal and professional development.

     

    The selected individual will work part-time (approximately 20 hours per week, up to a six-month duration).  The position will provide support and research to the team and work on various environmental programs and sustainability initiatives. Representative tasks include, but are not limited to:

     

    1. Assist with implementation of zero waste initiatives including waste audits through the Airport Authority’s waste hauler and internal waste audits as needed to assess habits.
    2. Assist with the implementation and growth of the SAN Green Concessions Program; Work with concessionaires on green practices, providing education and training on sustainable initiatives; Assist with check-ins and certification of new concessions.
    3. Assist with the development and implementation of employee education and engagement programs (including “Lunch and Learns”); Research educational materials for distribution.
    4. Assist with developing annual sustainability reports.
    5. Assist with growing The Good Traveler program through education and marketing efforts.
    6. Assist with data collection and identify ways to use information in outreach opportunities
    7. Assist with internal and external communications of sustainability information.
    8. Assist with research on environmental management systems and identify future initiatives at the airport.
    9. Other duties as assigned.

    5. RELATIONSHIP: Builds and maintains relations with stakeholders, identifies and relates information, ideas and problems. 

    6. LEVERAGING TECHNOLOGY: Effective use of electronic information and associated systems.

     

    Required Experience

    1. Students in a graduate program leading to an advanced degree, (MS, MBA, MPA, etc.) or a doctoral degree (JD, PhD, etc.) and currently enrolled in at least nine (9) graduate units in college or university. 
    2. Graduate students in their final semester or quarter need less than nine (9) units to graduate need only to be enrolled part-time in courses required for degree completion.

     

     

    This opportunity is ideal for students pursing a graduate degree in Environmental Science, Ecology, Natural Resources Management, Public Administration or other related field.
