Direct Support Professional John and Mildred Thoroughgood House LLC - Virginia Beach, VA Part-time Responsibilities: A part-time position of 16-32 hours a week with no benefits and involves weekend work. This individual will work under supervision of Residential Manager. The Direct Support Professional will exhibit practical knowledge of behavior management of principles, medication management, implementation of basic motor skills training techniques, alternative communication systems and medical aspects of disabled populations, ability to work with mentally challenged adults with mental retardation and other varying disabilities, enable individual to acquire, improve, and maintain maximum functional abilities, train and assist in settings which will allow peer interactions and an opportunity for community and social integration, act as occasional shift leader, write work orders for repairs in the work place, administer medication PRN, provide direct care in areas such as personal care, communication and documentation skills. Skills: Knowledge of TOVA, CPR, and First Aid, conduction training for mentally challenged adults in personal care, medication management, social, environmental and safety awareness, utilization of community resources, appropriate peer interaction, activities of challenged of daily living, sensory simulation, and fine and gross motor skills, supervising mentally challenged adults in a residential setting, following regulations of licensure, Human Rights, and OSHA, demonstrated documentation and interpersonal skills to include consumer's health and safety by adhering to OSHA regulations, Assisting with personal care, behavior and medication management, and daily living skills to include community participation, effective written and verbal skills, data collection techniques, and strong documentation skills and interpersonal skills. Ability to implement and follow training objectives, demonstrate effective verbal, written, and documentation skills, make sound decision, exercise safe driving techniques, get along with others in a professional manner, supervise and ensure the safety and rights of individuals, respond to emergency, administer medication, complete the ID Orientation Workbook exercises. Qualifications: High School Diploma or equivalent (GED) and a minimum of (1) year of work experience in the ID/DD/MH Residential or Day Support services preferred, valid Virginia driver's license, reliable transportation, and must submit to and pass a criminal background investigation and random drug screenings.
