    Job description

Just Us 4 Youth mentors at-promise youth to be better students, better people, and better leaders. We believe that education should be the great equalizer in a democracy, yet this is not currently so. To overcome an achievement gap, the organization set up the K.E.E.P program: a program devoted to academic excellence among at-promise youth. We are currently seeking proactive, driven, creative, and communicative individuals to help us in this goal by offering after-school support. We are seeking people who will not only be tutors, but also role models and mentors for urban inner-city youth. They must be able to partner with caretakers, teachers, and school administrators to support a child’s education. Since every site has two tutors led by a lead (who works with multiple schools), our tutors must work well in a team. Besides homework help, our program offers lessons in remedial math and reading, holds STEM projects, and identifies and addresses learning gaps in tandem with schools.

    Essential Duties/Responsibilities:

    • Develop lesson plans tailored to student needs based on academic assessments (in collaboration with team lead and with teacher suggestions)

    • Develop lesson plans tailored to student needs based on information provided by the KEEP curriculum team.

    • Implement lessons to a group of students in an engaging way to resist ‘dead-time’ in a tutoring session where students are not academically engaged

    • Flexible structure tutoring sessions according to fluctuations in students attending, their various needs, and available resources

    • Manage groups of students with various needs and attention spans using restorative justice model

    • Reinforce study skills, such as organizational skills and academic habits

    • Motivate students to learn (for example, by affirming their interests)

    • Regularly contact parents and teachers, and lead to share student progress.

    • Empower students to become leaders within class/non-classroom settings

    • Keep up to date with the necessary training, e.g., mandated reporter training, sexual harassment training, FERPA, etc.

    • Utilize a holistic approach to the intersectional identities of students. By understanding the race, class, gender, and other identities of our students, we can begin to examine the structures, practices, and policies that increase the risk of those students being discriminated against.

    Schedule Requirements:

    • Part-time, 15-20 hours a week during school months only (August through May, including training during breaks)

    • Hours are Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday from 2:00-6:00 PST, and Wednesday, 1:00-5:00 (times vary slightly by school site)

    • Participate in professional development to improve quality services for youth. Approximately 2-6 hours per month will be allocated for such training.

    Minimum Qualifications:

    • Must be at least 18 years of age

    • Must be legally authorized to work in the US

    • Preference is given to candidates who have an educational background (for example, a college degree in education or relevant experience)

    • Bilingual in Spanish and/or Mandarin has given preference

    • Candidates must be able to tutor in person.

    Job Types: Part-time, Temporary

    Pay: $18 per hour
