    Job Description

    POSITION OVERVIEW

    The Chief Financial Officer (CFO) leads the financial vision, strategy, and execution for KIPP DC. The CFO ensures KIPP DC has the financial leadership and resources to readily support and accomplish its organizational mission. The CFO serves as a key business partner to the Chief Executive Officer, President, Board of Directors, and Executive Team, as well as external stakeholders, such as our institutional bond investors, the Public Charter School Board, and the DC Council. The CFO sets high standards for financial integrity and stewardship across the organization to execute financial operations with impeccable customer service, ensuring compliance with all regulatory and governance requirements, and providing financial oversight and support for all teams at KIPP DC.

    The CFO role is an exempt position and will report to the President.  The CFO will manage the VP of Finance and Accounting and Senior Managing Director of Real Estate and Facilities. 

    KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • FINANCE & ACCOUNTING

      • Provides executive-level oversight in the areas of financial reporting, accounting operations, payroll, procurement, expense, and cash functions

      • Supports the Executive Team, President, and Chief Executive Officer in managing all aspects of the organization’s finances

      • Oversees the organization’s financial functions to ensure the accurate execution of operational finance (i.e., accounting, reporting, banking, budgeting, procurement, and compliance) and the delivery of all mandated financial reports to authorizers, lenders, funders, auditors, and other key stakeholders

      • Oversees and approves the development of the organization’s long-term financial strategy, including strengthening of the organization’s balance sheet and setting other appropriate financial targets to ensure strong financial health and financial sustainability for the organization

      • Oversees the execution of the existing KIPP DC debt portfolio and any future financings (with the support of the VP of Finance & Accounting), including compliance with debt service and cash on hand requirements and other reporting needs 

      • Oversees the execution of the KIPP DC Investment Policy Statement (IPS) (with support of the VP of Finance & Accounting)  

      • Oversees the execution of procurement (strategic purchasing and compliance) for KIPP DC (with support of the VP of Finance & Accounting) in coordination with the General Counsel team 

      • Oversees the approach and execution of KIPP DC payroll (with support of the VP of Finance & Accounting)

      • Reviews budget versus actual spending monthly (with support of the VP of Finance & Accounting), including a review of in-year projections versus plan and review of over/under spending 

      • Supports and manages treasury / banking relationships for KIPP DC 

      • Reviews protocols that are in place to effectively manage current and future federal and state grants to ensure grants are secured, allocated, budgeted, tracked, and in compliance; ensures that the team is updating protocols as needed per audit and best practice recommendations 

      • Reviews how technology is used to maximize the efficiency of the financial needs of the organization, including accounting, budget, expense management, and payroll software platforms; makes recommendations to Finance Committee, President, and CEO with the support of the Data, Information, and Operations teams 

      • Oversees the Finance & Accounting team annual budget

       

    • REAL ESTATE AND FACILITIES 

      • Oversees major construction for KIPP DC (with support of the Senior Managing Director of Real Estate and Facilities), including budget, project team decision making, timeline and special project needs (e.g., cross team collaboration) 

      • Reviews capital projects for KIPP DC (e.g., major facility specific improvements), including budget, project team decision making, timeline and special project needs (e.g., cross team collaboration) 

      • Leads any site acquisition or leasing for KIPP DC 

      • Oversees any real estate / leasing relationships for KIPP DC (where KIPP DC is lessor or lessee), with support of the Senior Managing Director of Real Estate and Facilities

      • Responsibility for the Capital Improvement Plan for KIPP DC, including the overall assessment and approach for allocating the current $15 million Reserve and all future allocations 

      • Oversees the Real Estate and Facilities team annual budget 

      • Oversee facilities maintenance relationship for KIPP DC (with support of the Senior Managing Director of Real Estate and Facilities), including budget and approach for ongoing maintenance and beginning-of-year/end-of-year planning 

      • Oversees and supports the real estate and facilities team in investing in tools and processes to scale best practices, reduce costs in personnel and issue revisits, and track school service fidelity over times

    • INTEGRITY AND FINANCIAL STEWARDSHIP 

      • Communicates clear expectations for adherence to policies

      • Develops and manages internal mechanisms for oversight and accountability across Finance & Accounting and Real Estate & Facility teams, including financial controls and compliance with local / state / federal requirements and accounting standards

      • Builds and improves upon the operating mechanisms to provide top notch customer support year around at campuses and HDQ

      • Approves annual audit and reporting, including 403(b) audit, Medicaid audit, 990, financial audit, S&P review, and other reviews as required by PCSB, OSSE, DC Council, or the federal government; responds appropriately to any recommendations or findings, coordinating with the KIPP DC Finance Committee and teams  

      • Monitors the budget process to ensure it is aligned with strategy

      • Monitors the in-year budget and year-end projections monthly to ensure on-track performance to achieve targets

    • INSURANCE AND RISK MANAGEMENT 

      • Collaborates with KIPP DC’s broker and is final decision maker on annual renewal process for insurance program

      • Maximizes insurance coverage while minimizing cost

      • Ensures training and resources are in place regarding safety and risk (financial and operational) protocols; should be top priority for all KIPP DC stakeholders (internal and external) 

      • Leads the team to work efficiently through claim management and mitigate outstanding risks, coordinating with the General Counsel

       

    • STRATEGIC LEADERSHIP

      • Serves as key external advocate for KIPP DC related to funding and financial policy (e.g., City Council, PCSB, OSSE, etc.), collaborating with content experts from the team 

      • Develops organization-wide financial strategies, systems and processes, and key performance indicators for growth and success

      • Partners with HDQ colleagues and school-based staff on operational and strategic issues as they arise; provides recommendations based on financial analysis and projections, cost identification and allocation, and revenue/expense analysis

      • Oversees the design, revision, and roll out for the creation of new financial systems, structures, and policies, and adeptly manages communication and project plans to ensure thorough understanding and follow-through

      • Oversees the creation of long-range and short-range financial models for new initiatives in collaboration with schools, appropriate HDQ colleagues, and the KIPP DC Finance Committee

       

    • TEAM MANAGEMENT 

      • Directly manages the VP of Finance & Accounting and Senior Managing Director of Real Estate and Finance. 

      • Identifies opportunities and leads the change management process to establish the CFO Team as collaborative and school-centric, supporting partnerships across the organization

      • Creates a professional development plan for all direct reports to increase their capacity, technical knowledge base, and soft skill growth

      • Manages the Board’s Finance Committee, serving as a trusted advisor and thought partner to its members and the Board

      • Works alongside all teams to support finance, accounting, and budget decision-making through the development and implementation of clear communication systems and timelines

      • Coordinates with other non-profit, KIPP regional, and other charter management CFOs to share and bring back best practices to KIPP DC

     

  • Qualifications

    REQUIREMENTS

    • 15+ years of professional work experience required; at least 10 years experience in senior finance and/or accounting roles (CFO, VP, or equivalent) 

    • Bachelor’s degree required; master’s degree in business administration, finance, or accounting strongly preferred

    • Significant experience in senior budget and finance positions at complex organizations required, ideally at education nonprofits or charter management organizations

    • Recent experience managing and running finance team at organization with >$150M in annual revenue preferred 

    • CPA preferred

    • Experience managing multiple teams and multi-layered teams required 

    • Experience managing financial systems required 

    • Experience and/or exposure to multiple program types (e.g., programs and school types)

    • Strong analytical capabilities including financial planning, forecasting, modeling, and data analysis; strong accounting oversight or direct management preferred 

    • Proven project management skills as it relates to the creation of different systems and structures

    • Strong financial controls and compliance experience, including exposure to annual audits and other external reviews 

    • Excellent communication skills and ability to work collaboratively across teams across the organization, and with the Finance Committee / Board of Directors 

    • Demonstrates integrity, both in words and actions, and encourages ethical behavior and decision making

    • Ability to convey complex technical concepts and solutions to broad audiences
