    Job Description

The KIPP New Orleans Teaching Residency is an innovative program launched in the fall of 2015. The residency program offers aspiring PreK-12 teachers a unique opportunity to receive high-quality and hands-on training at one of our KIPP New Orleans Schools (KNOS) while concurrently earning a Master’s degree from Relay Graduate School of Education (GSE). Residents will be paired with a KIPP staff member who will serve as a mentor and advisor for the entire school year. Additionally, KIPP New Orleans Teaching Residents receive extensive weekly training and practice through Relay GSE, allowing for a structured and supportive on-ramp into the teaching profession. KIPP New Orleans Schools fully commits to the growth and development of each Teaching Resident, supporting them to successfully complete the first year of the program. After mastering the first-year requirements, KIPP provides Teaching Residents support in obtaining a full-time teaching role while completing their Master of Art in Teaching (MAT) degree. This program is best suited for individuals who are passionate and committed to teaching as a long-term career path but who have not yet taught in a classroom or enrolled in a credentialing program.

WHY BECOME A KIPP NEW ORLEANS TEACHING RESIDENT? ● Gain practical training on how to effectively teach. Teaching is not easy and learning how to teach should be done thoughtfully and over time. ● Get valuable hands-on experience through practice, coaching, and individualized support. ● Gain access to a network of experienced teachers and school leaders. By joining the KIPP network, you join an incredible community of passionate and deeply dedicated individuals who share a common goal of creating a brighter future for New Orleans students. By successfully completing all requirements of the first year of residency, Teaching Residents will be priority hires for full-time roles at KIPP in their second year. ● Obtain a Master’s degree with minimal cost to you from one of the most innovative graduate schools of education.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to: ● Develop teaching skills through regular practice, coaching, and graduate school coursework. ● Attend two evenings of graduate school courses each week. ● Meet with the Resident Advisor and Talent Strategy team weekly to receive feedback and establish professional growth goals. ● Provide individual or small group instruction to students, with a gradual increase of responsibility for providing whole-class instruction by the end of the year. ● Assist lead teachers with other classroom responsibilities, including assessments, grading, and data analysis. ● Build relationships with students, their families, and the school community, and support school-wide needs and initiatives, where applicable. ● Participate in collaborative curriculum development, grade-level activities, school-wide functions, events, and trips. ● Successful completion of year one graduate coursework, instructional and school responsibilities, and certification requirements (e.g., Praxis exams). ● Develop the mindsets of highly effective teachers and educators and model the school’s and KIPP’s values in all communications and interactions with students, families, and staff.
