    Job Description

    ROLE OVERVIEW

    • Education Specialists serve as Special Education Teachers & Case Managers, working primarily with students with Individualized Education Plans in inclusive settings, resource programs, & highly specialized Special Education programs, both in an in-person classroom setting and virtually. Education Specialists work closely with school leadership, general education teachers, program specialists, and multidisciplinary teams to plan & implement individualized & rigorous educational programming for students in Special Education. Education Specialists are responsible for Case Management & Compliance, Goal Setting & Progress Monitoring, Stakeholder Engagement & Empowerment, as well as Lesson Planning & delivery of effective teaching practices for all students. 
    • Above all else, the ideal Education Specialist will find joy and purpose in supporting children to develop the habits necessary to be successful in school and beyond, and they will relish the opportunity to imbue our students with a love for learning.     KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

    Essential Functions and Responsibilities (for both in-class instruction and distance learning)

    • Plan, prepare and deliver lesson plans and instructional content that facilitate active learning  experiences 
    • Establish and communicate clear objectives for all learning activities
    • Provide a variety of learning materials and resources for use in educational activities
    • Identify and select different instructional resources and methods to meet students' varying needs 
    • Instruct and monitor students in the use of learning resources, tools, and equipment
    • Facilitate and monitor the progress of individual students and use information to adjust instructional strategies
    • Use relevant technology to support and differentiate instruction
    • Manage student behavior in the classroom (in-person or virtual) by establishing, clear and consistent expectations, consequences, and procedures for restoring relationships in accordance with the schools’ rules and disciplinary systems
    • Assign and grade class work, homework, tests, and projects
    • Provide regular, consistent, appropriate feedback on work
    • Maintain accurate and complete records of students' progress and development
    • Communicate regularly to students, colleagues and parents regarding student progress and student needs
    • Maintain and update all necessary records accurately and completely as required by KIPP and CA education code or regulations
    • Participate in KIPP, grade level, department, school, and parent meetings
    • Stay up-to-date with developments in subject area, teaching resources and methods and make relevant changes to instructional plans and activities
    • Conduct social-emotional learning lessons in adherence with the school's commitment to Restorative Justice both preemptive and reactive. 
    • Establish and maintain an inclusive, culturally relevant and sensitive classroom environment
    • During Distance Learning: Provide synchronous and asynchronous lessons, as outlined by school expectations and policies

     

    Special Education Responsibilities

    • Serve as Special Education Teachers & Case Managers, working primarily with students with Individualized Education Plans in inclusive settings resource programs, and highly specialized Special Education programs, both in an in-person classroom setting and virtually
    • Work closely with school leadership, general education teachers, program specialists, and multidisciplinary teams to plan and implement individualized & rigorous educational programming for students in Special Education
    • Responsible for case management and compliance, goal setting & progress monitoring, stakeholder engagement & empowerment
    • Plan and deliver lessons utilizing effective teaching practices for all students.

     

     

    Other duties 

    • Demonstrate preparation and skill in working with students from diverse cultural, economic and ability backgrounds
    • Encourage parent and community involvement, obtain information for parents when requested, promptly return phone calls and answer emails
    • Participate in appropriate professional activities and trainings
    • Participate in extracurricular activities such as social activities, sporting activities, clubs and student organizations
    • Other duties as assigned or required to contribute to a safe, positive, and culturally sensitive learning environment
    • Maintain confidentiality of student records as outlined by FERPA
    • On an annual basis, or as required by state and Federal regulations, complete all mandatory trainings 
    • Adhere to KIPP’s health and safety guidelines as outlined by the CDC, CDE, and public health agencies’ recommendations
    • Perform other duties as assigned
  • Qualifications

    Qualifications

    QUALIFICATIONS

    • Two years of successful, full time teaching experience in Special Education
    • Demonstrated success teaching students from educationally underserved areas with strong achievement results and documented growth on formative assessment and/or IEP goal assessment
    • Spanish, Arabic, Vietnamese, or Mandarin speaking proficiency

     

    EXPERIENCE:

    • Experience as an educator in a traditionally underserved community for one or more years with demonstrated strong achievement results and documented growth on formative assessments
    • Knowledge of child cognitive development and different learning styles
    • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others

     

    EDUCATION:

    • B.A/B.S degree from a regionally accredited institution
    • Hold a valid credential as an Education Specialist authorizing service in grade levels & areas assigned as an Education Specialist, including English Learner Authorization in the state of CA (Clear Credential or CLAD), or be in the process of securing a credential

     

    KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS REQUIRED:

    • Model KIPP values
    • Possess strong content area knowledge and classroom management skills
    • Proficient knowledge of Google Suite applications (Google Classroom, Hangout, Docs, Sheets, Slides, etc.)
    • Ability to learn and utilize instructional technology to support in-class and distance learning (i.e. Zoom, Nearpod) 
    • Communicate well with students, families, and colleagues
    • Be committed to working with educationally underserved students
    • Believe all students can achieve at the highest academic levels
    • Teach in our extended day and year schedule 
    • Contribute to a relentless and dedicated team of outstanding professionals
