    Job Description

    KIPP THROUGH COLLEGE

    • The KIPP Through College (KTC) program is designed to support KIPP SoCal alumni in Los Angeles and San Diego. An alumnus is any student who completes 8th grade at a KIPP SoCal middle school. KTC begins direct work with students and families in the 8th grade to help families transition to high school and continues until alumni graduate from college. In 2020-2021 our alumni group will include approximately 2600 high school students and nearly 2500 college-aged alumni. The KTC program is a critical piece of KIPP SoCal Schools’ commitment to do whatever it takes for all KIPP students, past and current, to be successful in high school, college, career, and beyond.

     

    WHAT YOU'LL DO

    • The Career Pathways Counselor supports KIPP SoCal alumni with successfully transitioning into careers after high school or college graduation. In the first year, the role will provide individualized college and career advising to alumni enrolled in college. In the second year, the role will expand to help alumni who are not enrolled in college to identify careers of interest and success in career training, workforce development programs, and the job search process. 
    • This role includes significant student outreach to promote college success and career events and advising sessions. This is a non-exempt position and will start as a virtual advising role until further notice.

      

    ALUMNI SUPPORT & ADVISING

    • Advise a caseload of approximately 100-150 KIPP SoCal alumni in post-secondary education pursuits including college, career and technical education (CTE), and career opportunities and pathways
    • Monitor the progress of student caseload toward post-secondary completion
    • Develop intervention plans and work with at-risk students to connect them with support staff and other resources to improve academic standing
    • Support alumni in maintaining/improving financial aid packages
    • Advise alumni who have graduated high school but not enrolled in college, who need assistance with identifying post-secondary education options, which can include CTE program exploration, and/or career planning
    • Maintain and enhance outreach through technology (social media, text messaging, virtual advising, etc.) to improve communication to alumni.

    CAREER READINESS SUPPORT

    • Lead the planning and expansion of KIPP SoCal’s Career initiatives, which includes but is not limited to, career readiness workshops, professional connections, career panels, career advising tools, and job shadow days, etc.
    • Assist alumni with completing and analyzing an interest/aptitude assessment as needed
    • Provide counseling to create an individualized career plan related to interests, skills, career opportunities, and education/training
    • Solicit and secure internships for high school and college-aged alumni
    • Identify and implement effective career advising strategies, including those that exist within the KIPP network.

    RELATIONSHIP MANAGEMENT & COLLEGE PARTNERSHIPS

    • Develop and maintain key contacts at CTE training programs, colleges, and universities
    • Foster and maintain relationships with KIPP SoCal Development team, Young Professionals Board, Workforce Investment Boards, corporate partners, and internship hosting companies.

    MARKETING, RESEARCH & DATA

    • Consistently enter and track data using the Alumni Database
    • Collect academic and financial data to guide follow-ups with students
    • Research and stay current on higher education programs and labor market research trends, and issues with student impact and make recommendations based on best practices and research
    • Prepare marketing, publicity materials, and reports as needed.
  • Qualifications

    Qualifications

    • A bachelor's degree from an accredited institution
    • Minimum of two years experience providing direct advising support and coaching to students
    • Strong career advising experience
    • Working knowledge of current retention practice theories and research with an emphasis on research, assessment, and data-informed decision making
    • Familiarity with the challenges and opportunities for first-generation college students
    • Demonstrated event planning and project management skills
    • Strong interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills
    • Ability to connect with people from diverse ethnic, socioeconomic, and professional backgrounds
    • Professional demeanor with strong initiative and creativity
    • Ability and willingness to travel to college and partner sites across Southern California
    • Flexibility to multi-task within an ambiguous, fast-moving, while also driving toward clarity and solutions
