    Job Description

    DUTIES AND ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

    The regional behavior specialist supports campus needs through development of and consultation with special education stakeholders, implementation of student interventions, coordination of ABA practices, data collection, and data review. The specialist will be responsible for assisting campuses with development of behavior support plans and monitoring student progress through data. The ideal candidate will have a passion for and experience with supporting students with complex behavioral needs. The candidate will work under the direct supervision of the regional director of special populations. 

    DUTIES:

    • Complete student observations and maintain accurate records

    • Support campus teams in data reviews to assist teams in intervention decisions

    • Support campus teams in data collection and record-keeping

    • Create and train on data systems and tools to measure the effectiveness of behavior support

    • Provide real-time coaching by modeling specific intervention strategies to special education stakeholders

    • Assist with completion of functional behavior assessments (FBAs), including training campus staff

    • Provide campus-based trainings as requested

    • Develop and maintain a calendar to ensure timely data analysis and student support.

    • Secure and share resources necessary to assist campus teams in Behavior Intervention Plan development and intervention implementation.

    • Alongside with the state leadership team, collaborate with campus and district Special Education teams as needed for student support

    • Attend problem-solving meetings as needed

    • Help shape and develop a district-wide atmosphere that best suits the needs of our students, teachers, and families

    • Other related duties as assigned

  • Qualifications

    Qualifications

    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:

    • Thorough knowledge of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) principles

    • Fundamental knowledge of IDEA and special education policies

    • Strong ability to:

      1. collect and analyze data

      2. coach and model evidence-based strategies, sometimes during moments of escalation

      3. create and support behavior intervention plans

      4. create and support campus crisis plans

    REQUIRED EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE: 

    • Bachelor’s degree in relevant field

    • At least 3 years working with students with complex behavior needs, including students with Autism or Emotional Disabilities

    PREFERRED EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:

    • Master’s degree in relevant field

    • Experience teaching underserved students (preferred)

    • Experience working with English Language Learners (preferred)

    PREFERRED LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION/SPECIALIZED TRAINING:

    • Board Certified Behavior Analyst

    • Licensed Behavior Analyst

    • Licensed Specialist in School Psychology

    Additional Information

    FUNDING:

    The Houston Behavior Specialist will be funded directly from the Elementary and Secondary Schools Emergency Relief (ESSER) grants awarded by the Texas Education Agency under the Consolidated Appropriations Act, 2021 (ESSER II) and the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021 (ESSER III). This position will be funded solely (100%) from the ESSER II and III allocation for direct expenses through September 30, 2023, and may continue to be funded through September 30, 2024, depending upon the availability of ESSER grant funds. At the end of the grant period, this position may be eliminated unless other sources of funds are secured to maintain this position or a similar position. The employee must sign this job description acknowledging receipt of the job description and signing their acknowledgment that this position is grant funded and is temporarily aligning with the terms of the grant period.
