Job Description
Position Overview:
· As part of an internal restructure and business improvement program, Kali Protectives LLC is looking for a Financial Controller who has seven to 10 years experience, particularly within a business or sector undertaking medium to high US and international sales transactions with wholesalers/distributors, retailers and online consumers.
· As a mature and experienced Financial Controller, you will undertake all aspects of financial management, including corporate accounting, regulatory and financial reporting, budgeting and forecasts preparation, and –in conjunction with the Office Manager—design and development of internal control policies and procedures. Working knowledge or experience using Fishbowl Inventory Management system would be a plus.
· As part of the company’s business improvement program, there is a desire and need to review and redesign the company’s QuickBooks-based accounting format to improve financial data capture, forecasting and budgeting, reporting and KPIs, and management decision making. As part of this program, the company is considering outsourcing payroll, and candidates with experience working with in-house payroll AND 3rd party payroll vendors will be highly regarded.
· To undertake this role, you will have a degree in accounting and deep expertise working with QuickBooks or another accounting package(s), along with a strong understanding of Payroll (internal processing or working with a 3rd party payroll provider).
· CPA qualifications would be advantageous but are not essential.
· An interest in bicycling, motorcycling and/or outdoor sports would be advantageous but not required.
Work Location :
· Hybrid: Work onsite at the company’s office and warehouse located in Morgan Hill, California, plus work from home when possible (likely two days per week – to be determined).
Employment Terms:
· Full Time, Monday to Friday during “normal” business hours of operation.
· Occasional “out of normal” business hours due to interactions with the Hong Kong office of the parent companies, plus possible ad hoc attendance at trade shows and new product launches (optional).
· For the ideal candidate, the company is willing to consider flexible start and end times of the workdays to accommodate family-related or other personal commitments.
Reporting Lines:
· The role reports to the Managing Director (MD) of Kali Protectives and co-reports to the MD of the parent companies abroad
· Oversees and monitors expenditures undertaken by the small management team that includes Research and Development, Product Design, International Sales, USA Sales (Inside and Outside), Marketing, and Warehouse & Logistics
· Works closely with (on an ad hoc basis) with the accountants of the parent companies (Hong Kong-based) and interacts with the company’s USA-based external accountant.
· Works in partnership with the company’s management consultant who is leading the business improvement and change program.
· Manages and mentors one full-time accounting and administrative assistant/bookkeeper.
Role Responsibilities:
· Manage all accounting operations including Billing, A/R, A/P, GL, Payroll, Benefits, Cost Accounting, Inventory Accounting, and Inter- company accounting for both Kali Protectives LLC.
· Manage the accounting operations including Billing, A/R, A/P, GL, Cost Accounting, and Inter-company accounting for the US company’s property holding LLC.
· Coordinate and direct the preparation of the budgets and financial forecasts, and report variances.
· Prepare and publish timely monthly and quarterly financial statements including working papers.
· Coordinate the preparation of regulatory reporting.
· Work with other departments to lead, develop or support budgeting, forecasting and creation of an overall business plan.
· Support year-end process and manage the relationship with external financial accountants.
· Ensure quality control over financial transactions and financial reporting, including calculating and posting sales commissions, facilitating correct intercompany transfers for product purchases, labor cost transfers, and R&D expenses plus other-related expenses.
· Manage and comply with local, state, and federal government reporting requirements, tax filings and payments.
· Work with the Office Manager to design and document business administration processes that require transparent accounting policies to maintain and strengthen internal controls.
· Design, create and implement a new and more meaningful accounting and GL structure within QuickBooks that assists management decision making through improved cost accounting. and oversee the migration from the existing QuickBooks accounts to the new (with parallel operations for a period of time).
· Manage, coach, and train a full-time bookkeeper to provide ongoing accounting and administrative support.
· Additional controller duties as necessary
Requirements and skills:
· Proven working experience as a Financial Controller
7 to 10+ years of overall combined accounting and finance experience
· CPA preferred, but not essential.
· Strong business process and budgeting knowledge with experience in forecasting and business planning a plus
· Detail focused and strong ability to multi-task with strong organizational skills.
· Improvement-oriented and focused on identifying business efficiencies.
· Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written
· Ability and interest in training and mentoring administration support staff
· Good working knowledge of MS Office applications (Outlook, Excel, Word)
· Deep understanding, working knowledge and experience with Intuit QuickBooks accounts and other accounting packages.
· Experience with creating financial statements.
· Experience with general ledger functions and the month-end/quarter-end/year-end close processes
· Experience of Inter-company transactions and working with Head Office
· Excellent QuickBooks user (including Payroll) and administration skills.
