    Qualifications: Must be at 16 years old. Willing to get CPR/First Aid certified. Must be able to successfully complete Red Cross training, and in water skills test and written examination on lifeguard skills and safety. Type of Position: Seasonal Hours: Flexible Over-time may be required. Job Summary: Monitors activities in swimming areas to prevent accidents and provide assistance to swimmers by performing the following duties. Duties and Responsibilities: - Cautions swimmers regarding unsafe activities and enforces facility rules. - Rescues swimmers in danger of drowning and administers first aid. - Determines chlorine content and pH value of water with water-testing kit and records readings. - Cleans the pool deck area and locker rooms. - Installs or removes lane lines and starting blocks. - Has the ability to perform the physical and cognitive skills necessary to achieve and maintain a lifeguard and CPR certification as prescribed by the agency. Safety and Risk Management - Maintains a working knowledge of all general agency and departmental specific safety rules. - Uses material-handling equipment or staff assistance when lifting and/or moving objects 50 lbs. or greater. - Promptly reports any work-related or patron injuries to supervisor. - Attends required safety program and in service education meetings. - Corrects unsafe conditions and/or reports them to supervisor. Must be able to use personal protective equipment based on job specific tasks and may include, but is not limited to, the following: a. Safety goggles/glasses. b. Earplugs, ear covers. c. Appropriate work boot. d. Protective gloves. e. Helmets. f. Respirators. Employee must be able to follow directions and communicate in English both verbally and in writing. 2. Employee must have the ability to read and understand materials printed in English. 3. Employee must possess good problem solving skills and have the capacity to act rationally and calmly in high stress and/or emergency situations. 4. Employee must be able to represent the Kankakee Valley Park District in a professional manner. 5. Employee must have the ability to make judgments with respect to confidentiality of information. Physical Demands: While performing the duties of this job, some bending, kneeling and reaching items off floor and high shelves is required. Climb ladders to reach guard chairs and to enter/exit the pool. Performing repetitive hand/arm movements as in sweeping or cleaning the pool deck. Ability to stand for sustained periods on the pool deck and water slide. Able to swim and enter the pool at any given time. Strong voice in order to be heard over pool noise. Reading hand written information and writing legibly. Ability to handle stress in order to cope with deadlines. The employee must lift and/or move up to 50lbs. Work Environment: The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate, but may be exposed to noise distractions from employees or patrons. Employee may work indoors in a smoke-free environment with warm temperatures, humidity, and fluorescent lighting. Employee may also be required to work outside during various weather conditions, including rain and mud, cold and hot temperatures. Employee must park in parking lot approximately one block from the building. $13-15 per hour DOQ
