    Job Description

    SUMMARY Kara offers on-site crisis support services to schools, organizations and businesses when a death has occurred or is anticipated in their community. The Community Outreach & Crisis Response Coordinator will work under the supervision of the Adult Services Program Director to address communities impacted by death through the preparation, implementation, execution, and follow-up activities of crisis response interventions. To be successful, a candidate must possess sound judgment, excellent organization skills, leadership abilities, be comfortable with technology, and enjoy working in a dynamic environment in compassionate support of clients and volunteers. Duties will include, but are not limited to, the following: ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES

    • Facilitate individual and group grief support debriefings for clients in the community impacted by death and loss.
    • Facilitate pre and post crisis intervention in the form of education and training offerings to community partners. Training and education offerings are focused on providing both preemptive planning for crisis and post vention skills in managing grief, death and dying in impacted populations.
    • Conduct administrative and operational tasks related to crisis response requests, including follow up communications with clients and timely entry of organizational information, statistics, and service evaluations in the agency database.
    • Assist in enlisting, coordinating, and preparing Kara’s crisis response team members (volunteers and other staff) in response to a service request
    • During crisis response events, oversee and monitor the service team’s work, and ensure appropriate resources and materials are prepared & distributed.
    • After each crisis response event, debrief team members, and communicate with the Director of Adult Services
    • Assist with training, supporting, and recruiting new Community Outreach crisis response team members.
    • Assist with agency-wide client service operations in collaboration with other Kara staff as needed.
    • Other program support duties as assigned.

    REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

    • Bachelor's Degree or equivalent
    • Commitment to Kara’s mission, vision and guiding values of empathy and compassion
    • Client focused with a deep understanding of the issues and factors facing individuals navigating grief and loss
    • Flexible, resourceful and innovative; strong initiative and follow-through skills
    • Excellent interpersonal skills; a team player and a team builder
    • Strong command of the English language in both verbal and written communication
    • Positive attitude and sense of humor
    • Quick to learn, and devise or apply ideas; and willingness to ask for help
    • Understanding of operational processes and procedures within an organization
    • Ability to work successfully under pressure in unpredictable service locations and with minimal supervision
    • Excellent organizational, time management, planning and problem solving skills
    • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, Google Docs, Cloud-based and database-related software applications
    • Ability to embrace and maintain confidentiality
    • High standard of professionalism and integrity
    • Ability to work evenings and weekends periodically

    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

    • Bi-lingual (Spanish or Other)
    • Experience working and engaging with community organizations
    • Experience as a Kara volunteer or similar program requiring in depth understanding of grief and loss support structures
    • Experience in Non-profit / Social Services / Health Care organizations

    WORK SCHEDULE/HOURS

    • 40 hours per week (exempt)
    • Ability to work occasionally on weekends

Serving more than 14,000 individuals from 2019 thru 2021, Kara provides a wide breadth of grief support and education services to the community including: individual and group peer support; in-house psychotherapy; on-site crisis response following a death; bereavement education and training services; Camp Kara, a bereavement camp for children 6-17 years old; and community events. Through a time-tested and highly effective peer support model (adopted from the Shanti Model), over 200 Kara volunteers supervised by a high quality staff, help grieving adults and children understand what they are experiencing and to cope in healthy ways. Kara provides a space where those in grief find deep relief in the company of others who understand. Our services are designed to be accessible (peer services are provided free of charge) and we are funded primarily by charitable donations and the generosity of the community we serve.
