    The State Teachers Retirement System of Ohio (STRS Ohio) is seeking a Senior Database/System Administrator or Database/System Administration Specialist to join its ITS Operations Department.     COMPENSATION & BENEFITS:

    Salary: High $90,000s to Mid $130,000s

    GENERAL SUMMARY:

     

    GRADE 11, SENIOR DATABASE/SYSTEM ADMINISTRATOR

    Under the direction of the supervisor, Systems and Database Services, ensure access to State Teachers Retirement System of Ohio (STRS Ohio) data by maintaining the availability, performance and integrity of databases,  Windows and UNIX operating systems, assist in the design and development of departmental standards and procedures.

     

    GRADE 12, DATABASE/SYSTEM ADMINISTRATION SPECIALIST

    Under the direction of the supervisor, Systems and Database Services, ensure access to State Teachers Retirement System of Ohio (STRS Ohio) data by maintaining the availability, performance and integrity of databases, Windows and UNIX operating systems, design and implement departmental standards and procedures.

     

     

    PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

     

    GRADE 11, SENIOR DATABASE/SYSTEM ADMINISTRATOR

    1. Perform upgrades, maintenance and access security for assigned databases per established procedures.
    2. Complete database schema and system changes for assigned systems per established procedures.
    3. Write, test and implement database maintenance jobs with minimal guidance.
    4. Provide support resolving application related database performance issues, conferring with users, co-workers and vendors, applying experience and judgment to develop solutions.
    5. Assist in the development execution, and documentation of database maintenance, backup, recovery and disaster recovery procedures.
    6. Support in the development, execution and documentation of procedures to maintain database performance using diagnostic tools.
    7. Assist in the analyzing and development of database and system metrics for growth and system utilization.
    8. Provide 24x7 on-call support, including after-hour, weekends and holidays on a rotating basis.

     

    GRADE 12, DATABASE/SYSTEM ADMINISTRATION SPECIALIST

    1. Proactively research and establish installation, upgrade and maintenance procedures for supported database systems.
    2. Research, design and develop security schemes for supported database systems.
    3. Perform all aspects of developing and implementing standards and procedures for database schema modifications, backup and recovery, and disaster recovery.
    4. Execute database backup and recovery.
    5. Proactively research, develop and establish standards for the recovery of databases on site and for disaster recovery.
    6. Develop, test and implement database maintenance jobs.
    7. Research and resolve application database performance issues through conferring with users, co-workers and vendors, online research, online training, applying experience and judgment to develop solutions.
    8. Evaluate and recommend new database systems and performance monitoring tools.
    9. Develop methods and procedures for monitoring databases and systems to pinpoint and resolve database and system problems.
    10. Apply preventative database and system maintenance patches.
    11. Maintain database patch levels.
    12. Provide 24x7 on-call support, including after-hour, weekends and holidays on a rotating basis.
    13. Advise other Database System Admin associates on after-hour on-call support process or procedures.

     

     

    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

     

    GRADE 11, SENIOR DATABASE/SYSTEM ADMINISTRATOR

    1. Associates degree in a related field required.
    2. Bachelor’s degree in a related field preferred.
    3. Three or more years’ experience in database administration preferred.
    4. General knowledge of:
    • SQL Server 2016, Oracle 12c, Oracle WebLogic 12, DB2 LUW 10.5 or later versions required.
    • SSIS, SSAS and SSRS required.
    1. Excellent knowledge of:
    • Database concepts and design required.
    • Database utilities, maintenance, performance and tuning and recovery required.
    1. General knowledge of Windows Operating System concepts required.
    2. Thorough knowledge of:
    • UNIX Operating Systems concepts, AIX and Red Hat Linux required.
    • Windows and UNIX scripting, PERL, TSQL and PL/SQL required.
    1. General project management skills preferred.
    2. Ability to function under pressure involving after-hour, on-call support and database recovery.
    3. Ability to work with and preserve confidential information required.
    4. Excellent oral and written communication skills required.
    5. Interpersonal skills necessary to deal effectively and courteously with internal and external contacts required.
    6. Excellent organizational skills and high degree of accuracy and attention to detail required.
    7. Considerable standing, walking, bending and lifting objects weighing up to 75 pounds required.
    8. Proven ability to operate Microsoft Office programs and standard office equipment required.
    9. Excellent work record of attendance, punctuality and the ability to maintain a flexible work schedule to meet business needs. Occasional evening, weekend and non-regular work hours may be required.

     

    GRADE 12, DATABASE/SYSTEM ADMINISTRATION SPECIALIST

    1. Associates degree in a related field required.
    2. Bachelor’s degree in a related field preferred.
    3. Five or more years’ experience in database systems administration preferred.
    4. Superior knowledge of:
    • SQL Server 2016, Oracle 12c, Oracle WebLogic 12, DB2 LUW 10.5, or later versions required.
    • SSIS, SSAS, SSRS required.
    • Database concepts and design required.
    • Database system capacity planning, auditing and performance tuning
    1. Superior understanding of database utilities, maintenance, performance and tuning and recovery required.
    2. Excellent understanding of UNIX Operating Systems concepts, AIX and Red Hat Linux are a plus.
    3. Thorough understanding of Windows and UNIX scripting, PERL, TSQL, and PL/SQL are a plus.
    4. Ability to independently function with close deadlines.
    5. Above-average ability to function under pressure involving after-hour, on-call support and database recovery.
    6. Ability to work with and preserve confidential information required.
    7. Superior oral and written communication skills required.
