    Job Description

    JOB SUMMARY:

    Under direction of the Safety Manager this position is responsible for assisting in the daily administration of the Injury Illness Prevention Program to reduce or eliminate occupational injuries, illnesses, and financial losses to Knife River Construction.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

    • High school diploma or equivalent.
    • Must possess and maintain a valid California driver’s license and qualify as a driver under KRC Safety Fleet Policy.
    • Excellent communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills.
    • Proficient computer skills including Microsoft Office.
    • Two (2) years’ experience in construction or related safety environment.
    • Ability to travel 30% - 50% and available to work weekends, holidays, and rotating shifts depending on the business needs.
    • Ability to communicate effectively with a variety of personalities.
    • Excellent research and analytical skills.
    • Strong research and analytic skills.
    • Strong problem solving and troubleshooting skills
    • Strong training skills.
    • Ability to travel regularly and drive to job sites.
    • Working knowledge of health and safety regulations related to construction, mining, ready-mix or transportation industries.
    • Working knowledge of Forklift, man lift, crane, and rigging safe operations.
    • Working knowledge of Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations, DOT, FMSCA.
    • Working knowledge of worker’s compensation insurance and financial matters related to health and safety programs.
    • Working knowledge of construction materials equipment and operations.
    • Flexibility to work across functions departments: safety/production/hr/etc.

    PREFERRED REQUIREMENTS

    • BA/BS degree in safety, construction, engineering, human resources or other appropriate discipline or equivalent combination of experience.
    • Minimum 3 years experience in health and safety programs for construction, or transportation industry, a regulatory government agency or similar organization or significant industry experience with strong safety focus/record.
    • Computer Software experience; JD Edwards and HCSS.
    • First-Aid, CPR Certified, OSHA 30 Hour Certification.
    • Knowledge of construction \ aggregate\transportation industry safety regulations impacting the industry (example: Part 46, CGC 42.16, ect...)
    • Certified trainer or significant training experience preferred.
    • Bilingual (English & Spanish).

    DUTIES AND/OR RESPONSIBILITIES

    • Performs safety surveys, job hazard analysis and inspections, prepares written reports of findings and recommendations for corrective or preventative measures where indicated and follows up to ensure measures have been implemented.
    • Assist with post-incident investigation and prepares report identifying possible incident causes and hazards for Safety Manager.
    • Assist; in the implementation of safety programs; set up and conducts training; CPR-First Aid, Lockout Tag Out, Forklift Certification.
    • Conducts drills and exercises on how to manage emergency situations; active shooter, earthquake, fire
    • Preparing and maintains training files, safety records and reports.
    • Perform routine safety inspections at various jobsites, plant, equipment. Safety inspections to identify and correct any unsafe conditions or behaviors.
    • Conduct new-hire orientation; administer safety orientations; pre-employment physicals; drug & alcohol analysis.
    • Communicate effectively (verbal, listening, written) and work with difficult people under high stress situations.
    • Self-motivated, team-player, good with interpersonal skills.
    • Organizing, Monitoring, Documenting and helping with safety meetings regarding specific safety issues.
    • Ability to maintain positive customer relations & act courteous/respectful of others.
    • Maintain and ensure efficient records maintenance system for workers’ compensation claims and related information, data and activities.
    • Coordinating safety responsibilities with Safety Manager
    • Assisting supervisors during regulatory agency inspections and investigations
    • Maintaining a cooperative relationship with Corporate Safety Department.
    • Tracks and reports trainings documents, summary reports and inputs data into computer software.
    • Answers phones, filing, photocopying, scanning, letter and report generation and/or administrative duties as needed
    • Communicate effectively (verbal, listening, written) and handle all after hour and weekend changes.
    • Self-motivated, team-player with good interpersonal skills; ability to maintain positive customer relations and act courteous/respectful of others.
    • Troubleshoot and problem solve situations/problems (material quality, equipment operation/repair, etc.).
    • Monitor and communicate with field, managers and supervisors of any upcoming challenges Suggest methods of improvement to supervisors/managers.
    • Ensure that all tasks assigned to you are organized, performed safely, and completed in a timely manner.
    • Provides routine administrative support to Safety Manager. May assist Operations & Field as needed.
    • Performs other duties as assigned.

    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

    • Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions, in high production environment and respond quickly and effectively under pressure and deadlines.
    • Ability to make independent judgments to manage and facilitate company programs, policies as they relate to the safety of our work.
    • Ability to wear Personal Protective Equipment; Hard Hat, Safety Glasses, Safety Boots, Safety Vest, Safety Harness.
    • Excellent communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills.
    • Ability to teach, mentor and lead.
    • Ability to learn new software programs and proficient computer skills including Microsoft Office.
