    Editorial Intern Know Your Meme - Brooklyn, NY 11249 Part-time, Internship Are you a high-functioning college student seeking to get your foot in the door of social media journalism and digital media research? Are you struggling with a crippling meme addiction and trying to turn your life around? Do you push yourself to go above and beyond when you are learning something you are passionate about? If your answer is yes to all three, then you should consider applying for the 2018 summer internship program at Know Your Meme. The Program This is a three-month-long editorial internship program based out of our New York City office in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. All applicants must be currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate-level program at a college or university, preferably in pursuit of a degree in journalism, digital anthropology or library science. This is an unpaid, part-time position; the internship may be used towards academic credit with the approval of your institution. Opportunities During the course of the three-month program, the intern will be given ample opportunities to expand his/her portfolio in online publishing and learn the ropes of reporting on internet culture and social media trends in real time, with hands-on guidance and mentorship from the worlds leading meme researchers, including a wide range of advanced techniques in web search, trendspotting, search engine optimization, knowledge organization and data-driven journalism. The Syllabus June: Meme Research * Week 1: Deep Googling * Week 2: Trendspotting * Week 3: Investigating the Origin * Week 4: Mapping the Spread July: Meme Curation * Week 5: Restoring Artifacts * Week 6: Citing Authorship * Week 7: Analyzing Metadata * Week 8: Curating Digital Media August: Meme Analysis * Week 9: Web Analytics * Week 10: Identifying Memeplexes * Week 11: The Meme Lexicon

    • Week 12: Semiotics and Memetics Responsibilities The main responsibilities of the position will consist of researching, writing and editing encyclopedic and news articles in a fast-paced, 24-hour digital newsroom environment, as well as indexing and organizing our ever-growing volume of articles and data points through the use of metadata. The intern must be able to work out of the office and will report directly to the managing editor, with a minimum commitment of 16 hours per week during June, July and August. Desirable Qualities * Mastery of the English language and news-writing conventions * Familiarity with Elements of Style, Associated Press and Wikipedia Style Guides * Basic understanding of HTML, markup languages and Photoshop (or equivalent) * An in-depth knowledge of internet memes and genuine interest in trend reporting * A history of active and continued presence on social media or online communities * An existing member of the Know Your Meme community?
